The convenient South Melbourne location and proactive communication were appreciated during my nine-day stay at Clarion Hotel South Melbourne. When the elevator was out of service, for example, the hotel emailed an apology in advance. Still, the stay was a mixed experience, and at around $1200 for nine nights, I didn’t feel it was good value. Housekeeping was a major concern. I was told there would be no cleaning for the first 6-7 days, which seemed unusual for a stay that long, and the lack of regular service affected my comfort even after that period. The breakfast also didn’t match what I’d expect from something advertised as included at a hotel. Instead of a buffet or dining area, it was a basic package of cereal and milk, which felt misleading. There were practical problems in the room as well. The iron was burnt and unusable, and four hangers weren’t enough for a longer stay. There was no safe in the room or at reception, which left me concerned about storing valuables. Better housekeeping, room amenities and clear information about services, especially breakfast, would make a big difference.

The room was tidy and very clean, with all the amenities I needed. Staff were lovely, and even upgraded my room and let me check out later at no extra cost. The location was great, easy to find and within walking distance of Anzac train station. I’ll stay again and recommend it to everyone.

Having a staff member at reception at all times made the building feel very secure. They were quick to greet us whenever we came and went, and always happy to chat. The team also gave us great ideas for things to do in Melbourne and did everything they could to make the trip special. My best friend and I stayed at Clarion for a week for the Formula 1 Grand Prix. The rooms were lovely, consistently clean and full of natural light. It’s less than a five-minute walk to gate 5 and about five minutes to Anzac station. This was my third year travelling from out of state for the Grand Prix, and Clarion has been my favourite place to stay for race week by far. I’ll be back next year 😊

Definitely not worth the money. We paid $674 for a double room for three nights, expecting a good stay at a 4-star hotel, but there was no housekeeping and no extra blankets, sheets or towels. We also ran out of shampoo and body wash, and the tiny bottle provided wasn’t enough for three days. There was no tea or coffee either. The bathroom had only two small packets of dish soap, and when I asked for more, I got just one. The shower setup was extremely inconvenient. There was only a ceiling shower head, so the water fell straight down and you had to wash your hair while showering. No other shower head or shower caps were available, so our hair got wet. The worst part was that the room temperature was controlled from reception and stayed at 22 degrees Celsius. We were freezing and got sick all three nights. This was the worst hotel experience I’ve ever had 👎

The room was basic but okay, though there was just one knife, fork and spoon, plus a single glass and coffee cup. The lifts weren’t working, and the email telling us came only the day before. We had to climb six flights of stairs. Not happy Jan.
