Dinner was a mess. The late-night menu wouldn’t let me order a drink, and neither in-room dining nor concierge answered the phone. I had to get dressed and go to reception, where Bella helped place my order. The meal eventually came without the chillies I’d ordered or the drink. I was told those might arrive in 10 minutes, so I started eating while the food was getting cold. They showed up about 15 minutes after I’d finished. A horrible dining experience. I complained, and the person who checked the phone couldn’t reach anyone either. I asked to speak to the duty manager. Bella apologised and explained that the shift handover hadn’t been thorough, which was why the phone wasn’t working and nobody could be reached. She offered to waive the dinner charge and asked what else might improve the rest of my stay. I was tired, dissatisfied and unhappy, and didn’t have an answer. This isn’t what I expect from a Marriott Bonvoy affiliate like the Westin. I sincerely hope nobody else has such a terrible experience. Earlier, at reception, I’d asked Stanley whether they had my Marriott Bonvoy details. They said they didn’t, so I wrote my number on the check-in document, but it wasn’t checked. The Westin in Brisbane had checked it the previous night.

I’ve just got back to Sydney after a week at The Westin Melbourne, and I’m already looking forward to returning. The pool and spa were a bonus, and the gym was well equipped. The ground-floor concierge staff were always helpful, and there was a great spot for a glass of wine and the best club sandwich I’ve had. My room was immaculate, with a little balcony, and the bed was super comfortable.

The bathrooms are always clean and well kept, and there’s wheelchair and walker access from the road. The setting and prices fit the location and surroundings. I had a relaxing meal before a show at the Regents Theatre, sitting in a lovely spot overlooking Swanston Street. The staff were a pleasure. My chicken and bacon club sandwich arrived hot with salad and potato fries, all cooked just right. The champagne was excellent too. Highly recommend.

The Executive Lounge was roomy, relaxed, friendly and very well run. The gym was clean, bright and maintained well. Check-in was professional and quick, and the staff were first class. An outstanding Marriott property, head and shoulders above the other Marriott hotels on the continent.

Being right in Melbourne CBD made it easy to walk around and reach public transport. Staff stayed professional, friendly and helpful throughout our visit. The room was comfortable, with a nice city view and thoughtfully chosen amenities. Everything felt easy and relaxing, and we’d happily stay at this hotel again.
