Eltham Retreat Guest House

We had to cancel the day before our stay because of a death. Moses was very kind and understanding, and refunded us in full even though he would have lost money because of our cancellation. We’re very grateful.

The balcony views were amazing, and the backyard was lovely. It was sunny on our wedding day, and the sunlight falling across parts of the yard made it feel magical. Our photographer took a few photos there. The outdoor table and chairs have no shelter, just mesh, so they got wet when it rained. Late at night, possums came out back, climbing the poles beside the table and getting very close. They were amazing to watch. The house was a bit hard to find after three U-turns, but once we arrived it was beautiful. The kitchen was modern, the bedrooms a good standard size, and the ensuite was modern and spacious. We couldn’t tell whether the spa bath jets were faulty or we just couldn’t work out how to use them. I stayed at the Eltham Retreat for our wedding in January 2017. Moses was friendly and courteous, made the stay easy, and organised everything. I was very happy with the service and would definitely recommend staying here. Five stars. Holly

All in all, a very disappointing stay. The house was over $1,600 for the week, then there was a $500 bond that took three weeks to return to the bank account. There were so many rules with extra costs that we took our rubbish with us instead of using the property’s bins. We were two middle-aged women renting for a week, but we couldn’t choose which bedroom to sleep in because Mr Moses Price locks the other bedroom doors. I had specifically asked the owner, Mr Moses Price, about stairs because I’d had a hip replacement, but got no answer. There are 14 stairs to the front door, with an unsafe handrail and steps and poor lighting. The driveway is very steep, and the entrance isn’t well marked or lit. The place was overpriced and cockroach-infested. There are no blinds on any windows, so the house is cold, and the busy road outside makes it noisy and breaks up your sleep. There’s no clothes dryer. The deck and BBQ are exposed to all weather, with no cover, so the deck is unusable in poor weather. It had a hole covered by a rug, no outdoor chairs, and no safety ropes. The yard also has dangerous broken steps. The bathroom door wouldn’t stay closed.

I think he’s greedy for money because he doesn’t change the bedsheets, which is really bad. Don’t ever go here.
