I’m reviewing the shopping complex only. I haven’t stayed in or lived in the apartments, and don’t know anyone who currently does. The website suggests they aren’t taking more guests. The complex was completed by Multiplex in 1996 in what they call a “postmodern” style. Think Memphis group, but with more beige, brown and green, and a little more restraint. There’s a lot of symmetry and pattern, unlike newer shopping centres. The supposed “extensive range of boutique style retail outlets” doesn’t really live up to its lofty wording. Most of the place is beauty shops and dubious “massage” parlours, with a few other businesses. I can think of at least five or six parlours, where women used to pace out front soliciting men, almost exclusively, to come in. On my recent visit, Centre Management had put notices on the shop railings forbidding the practice. I think they’d realised how much it hurt the centre’s image. It seems to have worked, as the women aren’t outside now, though the parlours still operate. There may be a barista school and a Kpop merchandise shop on the top level, plus a framing shop on level 2. The “international” food court seems to be the main attraction. Options include Ceylon Wok, Demarco espresso Bar, and a thai restaurant. Demarco and the thai restaurant seem the best bets for food and service; Ceylon Wok is okay, but nothing special. I’ll write separate reviews of those places later. It gets crowded from 12:00-13:30 when office workers come for lunch. Outside that window, the centre is very quiet, almost a dead mall. I’d probably rate it a 4 if not for the parlours, since it’s well designed and easy to navigate.

It’s an older building, but it’s been well looked after.

The apartment had good views of Parliament House and St Pats Cathedral, and we enjoyed the sunrise from there. It was quiet on the 12th floor, with barely any traffic noise, and the roller blinds made the bedrooms nice and dark. The apartment and both bedrooms were spacious for four adults and a child, and the master bed was comfortable. The kitchen had the utensils we needed, and there was a washing machine and dryer as expected in a serviced apartment. Staff were friendly and efficient, the location was excellent, and the on-site parking allowed multiple entries and exits during our stay for a fee. On checkout day, the exit time was 11am. We booked a two bedroom apartment at Paramount Serviced Apartments through Agoda, where it was on special, for my mother in law’s birthday. The positives outweighed the drawbacks. The room was dated, and I found toenail clippings on the living room floor. The lift system was a little confusing, although they explained it at check-in. The balcony was locked. We didn’t call reception to have it opened because the weather was pretty average, but it was frustrating that we couldn’t use it. All the windows were locked too, so there was no natural airflow. As with other serviced apartments we’ve stayed in, long term residents also live in the building. Luckily our neighbour was quiet and we didn’t hear a thing from their apartment. For reference, the lift route from the apartment is as follows. To reach reception at 181 exhibition street, take the lift to level 2 and change lifts. For the car park, go to B1 and change to the lift for the right level. For the food court, go to B1, change lifts, then up to G. For the Bourke street and little Bourke street exits, go to B1, change lifts, then up to 1. They give similar directions at check-in. I’d consider staying again on our next city break.

A great place to live, right in the best part of the CBD.

I have lovely memories from a stay here several years ago, and would like to come back this year. Unfortunately, it seems the apartment is no longer operating. It was the best value for money in the CBD, with generous space and a full kitchen.
