Castaways Resort & Spa Rainforest

We saw a cassowary with its chick on the road out of town, and the location itself was lovely. Our room was in the secondary building, which felt a bit old but was comfortable. There’s a good restaurant in the main building, and plenty of other choices around town. We also had a nice view from the room on a wet morning.

The older ground-floor room was a good size, with a modern shower and toilet. Parking at the back put us right by our door, and shops, cafes and bars were all within walking distance. We did have to collect the key from the newer Resort across the road first, but the friendly receptionist sorted that very quickly. We’d definitely stay again and can recommend it.

We had a comfortable hotel-style room with a patio facing the rainforest garden and pool, and the reception staff were lovely. The bathroom could use a refresh, though the shower pressure was good. The shower was so low you’d need to be about five feet tall to fit underneath. We booked for three but got just two cereal bowls and no spoons at all, teaspoons included. Little things like that.

The room wasn’t ready until 2:30 pm because of “covid cleaning.” I’d assumed the cleaning would be done before 2 pm, or that check-in would be listed as 2:30 if it couldn’t be. The TV remote barely worked, and after an hour we managed to get channels, but reception was terrible. The bed was extremely uncomfortable, the pillows felt old and lumpy, and there were cockroaches in the bathroom and stains on the towels.
