The wildlife and views were amazing. We saw sea Eagles, seals and penguins, and got incredibly lucky when a whale came very close. The park rangers were friendly and knew a lot. Bring a windcheater since it gets windy, and take snacks because there’s no food. You can’t leave anything behind if the environment is to stay pristine. Such an incredible trip.

The sea can get a bit choppy, so check the weather before you go. We snorkeled around the Island and joined a guided walk there. It’s an extremely beautiful, joyful place, and the National parks staff were really friendly and helpful.

We loved wandering around and climbing up to the lighthouse platform. The historic lighthouse is fantastic, and the views, seals and whales make this a must-see visit. The place is very well looked after, and we had a great guide too.

We were extremely lucky to see an Orca swim past. On the Narooma Dive and charter tour, National park volunteers share the island’s history, and you can get close to the breeding colonies of birds and fur seals. A great place to visit.

You need to pre-book a tour to get onto Montague Island (Burunguba). I went on a Sunday morning with Narooma Charters, and at $140 it seemed the best value option. Everyone on our tour chose to snorkel with the fur seals, and we also had a 3-hour guided tour of Burunguba with Liz, our designated National Parks guide. She was excellent. You can stay on the island too, but the former Lighthouse keepers cottages have limited accommodation and must be arranged in advance, through National Parks I believe. It’s a stunningly beautiful place, well worth visiting for its history and scenery.
