Rothery House

The fireplace made the house especially cozy, and we really enjoyed our time there. It's a lovely old place with clean, well-equipped rooms and excellent facilities. The supermarket is handy without being right on top of you. A great base for staying in the area.

The house is in a lovely spot and has character, but the cheap makeover feels aimed at maximum profit. It was freezing inside, with only an open fire and two old column heaters for four bedrooms. The owners leave four logs to get you started, then you have to buy your own wood to try to take the chill off. The website doesn't mention that there's no other heating. There are two bathrooms, but one is a converted wash house off the back verandah with no heating, and it was far too cold to use. Door knobs came off in our hands, and the old doors had such large gaps that we had to wedge pillows against them to keep the cold out. Supplies were very basic for a place meant to sleep eight, with only four wine glasses. I wouldn't recommend it or stay again unless proper heating for an Alpine district house is installed.

Lorraine was a very accommodating host, and the place was spotless. We stayed cozy by the big wood-burning fireplace. It's right in the heart of town, and I'll be back.
