We really enjoyed the pool, which was relaxing and well kept, and Woolworths is right across the road. The shared lounge was cosy, with a large fridge, microwave, and induction hot plates, so making simple meals was easy. Cutlery and dishes were limited to what came in the room, two plates, two bowls, and basic cutlery for us, but that worked for a short stay. We booked an ocean-view queen room and loved waking up to the ocean from bed. The room was nicely decorated, and there were thoughtful touches around the property. It’s a great little hotel in a handy spot. One letdown: bike hire was only available from noon to 5.30pm, while reception was open. We’d hoped to ride in the morning, but only found out on arrival that we couldn’t hire bikes until midday. It was a bit disappointing, though most attractions were easy to reach on foot, so it didn’t affect the stay too much. We’d definitely come back.

We stayed three nights for the State Oztag in Coffs Harbour. The hotel was full of Oztag families, many of whom we knew. The new receptionist was rude to several of us when we arrived, but we didn’t let that spoil our excitement about the holiday. After 9.30pm on the first night, she angrily called me because my 13 year old son and other boys were in the pool after it had closed at 8pm. He was also in trouble for kicking a Wahu rubber pool ball in the carpark with another boy. I was told to control my child. I apologised sincerely and said it wouldn’t happen again, and it didn’t. I was warned we’d be kicked out immediately if it happened again. That felt harsh and rude, as others I spoke to agreed, but I moved on. On Saturday afternoon Robyn called again and threatened to kick us out if the kids caused any disruption or swam after the pool closed. By then I was upset. I told her we’d been coming for four years, had booked multiple rooms, and brought other customers with us, without causing trouble before. She replied, “Don’t take this the wrong way, but Oztag doesn’t pay all the bills and we don’t need your business.” After we left, we got an email saying we weren’t welcome back. We wouldn’t return anyway. It was the most offensive service I’ve ever encountered. I guess they’re lucky people don’t go there for the service!

Nambucca Heads is a lovely town, with lovely locals, and makes a great halfway stop between the Gold Coast and Sydney. From The Beach Rooms we walked everywhere: V Wall, Shelly Beach, Matilda’s/Tilly’s, town shops, Nambucca Surf Co for shopping and coffee, and the Boatshed to hire kayaks. The rooms and interiors were lovely, with hooks everywhere for towels, jackets, and bags, such a useful detail. Everything was clean, and the pool and covered lounge area were well maintained. Highly recommend The Beach Rooms.

The rooms had a nice view and the location was great, but our stay was spoiled by Robin at reception. She was rude throughout and aggressive when we asked basic questions. She kept warning us that there were cameras everywhere because we were kids. We’d booked rooms for five other families coming for State Cup, and she told us, “we don’t rely on you to get customers.”

The rooms were clean, modern, and nicely designed, and I liked the location and the tips for local restaurants and activities. The manager was a little hostile when we asked about a late checkout. Even so, it had a laidback feel and was a really nice experience overall.
