We booked for one night, but left in under four hours because there was no water anywhere in the building, toilets included. The man at the desk told people to shower at the petrol stations, in the park, or at the pool, saying, “the pool is clean enough”. I get that they may not be able to prevent problems like this, but guests weren't warned and no compensation was offered. That made it even more frustrating for us as two young female backpackers. The rooms were disgusting too. The pillows and mattress were stained with who knows what, and the old beds felt unstable. There were no support bars on the top bunk. Everything seemed old and falling apart. Don't waste your travel money here.

I left after one night and was glad to return to Hostel G, where I'd had an amazing experience. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. The hostel was filthy and badly maintained, especially the disgusting kitchen. My roommate seemed to live there permanently, in a miserable lifestyle. Around 2am, when I came into the room, my roommate attacked me. She was extremely aggressive and racist, saying it was her country and that I should “be more careful” because she wasn't afraid. I went to reception for help. One staff member, a young bald man with hippie-style decorations on his clothes, was dismissive and no help at all. He basically said, “Well, these things happen in a shared room.” The other gentleman was kind, attentive, and supportive. He was the only one who treated me well. I usually like leaving reviews after visiting places and thought about skipping this one, but others should know so they can avoid it.

At least I saw lots of Perth, since I couldn't bear to spend much time in the hostel. The bedroom door light switch wasn't great, the balcony door wouldn't close properly, the carpet was old and stained, and there was rubbish under the bed. There was plenty left behind by previous guests in the rooms and bathroom. I even wondered whether the cleaner thought a guest owned the rusty razor in the shower. I saw cleaners around, but they weren't cleaning the places that needed it, like the bathrooms, bedrooms, and kitchen. The place needs a deep clean. The kitchen floor and dish draining board were filthy, and following the rule about washing your dishes was hard when there were no clean tea towels.

The common areas were fine, but the rooms and toilets felt pretty depressing. They need a lot of general maintenance and don't make a good first impression. You also have to make your own bed, and there isn't aircon in the rooms. I've stayed in different backpacker hostels as a traveler, and in my humble opinion, if you're a bit picky, this isn't the place for you.

The refund takes 1-5 business days, and you'll definitely lose money on the exchange rate between the charge and refund. Never coming back. At check-in on 30/Oct/2025, Billabong Backpackers hostel required a AUD30 deposit. In most hotels or hostels in other countries, they hold that amount on your credit card as security until you check out safely and leave the place clean. This hostel charged my card right away without knowing which bank issued it. I've traveled around the world and never had this happen. Shame on Billabong Backpackers hostel! The policy is still frustrating even though Rebecca Legg (General Manager) replied that there's something she can't control about the banking system. She forgot that putting the amount ON HOLD would have eased our frustration. Shame on Billabong Backpackers hostel's policy again.
