Mantra on Hay Perth

The check-in staff were pleasant, and the beds were sound. The smart TV and air con worked, though one was missing a remote. You can walk to some places from the hotel, but the area felt a little unsafe. I knew it was a budget hotel and didn't expect much, but the dirty, stained lift carpet and smell of rubbish made me think I'd chosen badly as soon as we went in. The corridors smelled even worse. Our room was musty, though tolerable. Luckily the sheets were clean, but little else was. The carpets felt grimy enough that I didn't want to walk barefoot, and the furniture was damaged and stained. The curtains looked dirty, the bathroom had mould, and the dishwasher didn't work. The couches felt too dirty to sit on, so we used our blankets. The beds had synthetic blankets, and the pillows were in bad shape. After checking out, I felt like I needed to decontaminate myself and all my luggage. Maybe it's fine for younger guests or people with lower cleanliness standards. I haven't stayed in a Mantra for years, so maybe this is how they are now. Lesson learned.

The room itself was pretty standard, and a couple of things were awkward. It was hard to find at first because the sign was on a side wall. The fridge was tucked in a cabinet and only sealed if I pushed its door firmly, so I couldn't work out why it wasn't cooling properly. There was a jug and toaster but no outlet for them, so I plugged them in in the bathroom. Also, there was no streaming connection, and the TV didn't work on the first night. Still, the service was great. I reported the TV, went out for the day, and it had been fixed when I got back. Little inconveniences like these don't bother me much, but good service does, and the desk and maintenance staff were fantastic. I'd gladly stay again. Thanks for having me.

For the price they're charging these days, I expected better quality and value. The place needs a full makeover to meet today's accommodation standards. The Wi-Fi is dreadful, and the bathroom has mould around the shower base and sink opening. The shower pressure is concerning too, with the water switching between hot and cold. Staff were okay, though they could be friendlier and more professional.

We don't usually rant about places we've stayed, but this one really needs to fix things or upgrade the rooms. We definitely wouldn't return or recommend it. The bathroom products were so watered down they were like water, and there was mould in the grout above head height. The toilet seat didn't fit properly and kept moving. The kitchen drawers were disgusting, so we washed everything before using it. There was no egg flipper, so we bought one and took it home again. The frying pan was so old it was useless. The room had little flies that seemed like drain bugs, so we bought fly spray. The hallway smelled disgusting, like old water damage. When we asked a man about it, he said, “Really, what smell?” We could only laugh. On the fourth floor, we saw a humidifier near the elevator, and cleaners sprayed a different air freshener each day, presumably to cover the smell. The dryer door fell off during our stay. The manager who came up said I must have pulled too hard. I told him it was very old and in bad shape, and we have photos to prove it. A maintenance man replaced the door the next day, but it never worked properly afterward because the door was missing its proper cover.
