Drift House

We arrived on a blustery July day after a night in a basic Apollo Bay motel, and walking into The Drift House felt like finding a hidden paradise. The owners, John and his wife, have turned several heritage houses near the river into a secluded retreat, with architectural charm and sumptuous interiors. The design is beautiful, and the comfort and warmth rival Europe's finest hotels. With only five or six rooms, the attention to detail feels flawless. Marley, who manages front of house and nearly everything else, gives gracious, attentive hospitality. Dinner at The Kitchen was a highlight. The intimate, beautifully designed dining room serves a Spanish-inspired menu that changes daily. We live in Spain, and the food felt so authentic it took us back home. John and his wife draw inspiration from their yearly trips to Spain, and it shows in every dish. My son stayed in the stunning fireplace suite, while my own room was equally opulent, with understated elegance, and felt like a sanctuary. For a romantic weekend from Melbourne, just three hours away, or a stop on the Great Ocean Road, Drift House offers luxury, warmth, memorable food and genuinely caring service. A flawless gem in Port Fairy.

The bed was comfortable, breakfast was excellent and the location was great. Loved the stay. Just keep in mind that rates can change massively at the last minute.

Maddie is a real asset to the team and brightened every morning for us. The rooms are beautiful and comfortable, and the food was the star. Breakfast each morning was delicious, fresh and offered excellent choices. We also loved dinner in the Salon, the food was amazing. Every part of our stay at the Drift House blew us away. We hope to be back soon!

We couldn't pick just one standout when our host asked, because every plate we tried came to mind. The seasonal menu kept everything full of flavour, with some lovely surprises. The Buñuelos de bacalao (Seville’s famous salt cod fritters), beetroot with blue cheese and caramelised walnut, chorizo and duck were all worth looking out for, and the wines were excellent too. On arrival, we were offered drinks and warming cocktails in the sunken lounge before being shown into the dining room for Spanish-inspired dishes. If you’re in Port Fairy and want to treat yourself to dinner, check the opening times and book ahead. It’s usually Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, but do check first. It feels like Port Fairy’s best kept secret for now, though I can’t imagine that lasting.
