The water problem was the most serious part of our stay. There was no notice that it wasn’t safe for brushing teeth, showering, or drinking, though the owners knew. Within 12 hours of checking in, people in several different rooms who didn’t know each other were vomiting. I hadn’t planned to post, but I’m pregnant and needed medical attention after staying there, so I want others to know about the unsafe water. This is a major health issue, and knowingly leaving guests uninformed is not good enough. The room also smelled unclean as soon as we opened the door, and housekeeping seemed lacking. There were no mattress protectors, and the bath had hair and soap scum, so we avoided it and showered wearing thongs. Check-in was uncomfortable too. I was picking up keys for family members who were still on their way, and was told they hadn’t paid, although they had. Maybe it was an honest mistake, but I don’t know. I’d been given the wrong room despite paying for a family room. The owner blamed the booking agent, and it was sorted out after he swore in front of me. Very unprofessional. The reception was also the owners’ lounge and dining area. I felt as if I was interrupting the family who live there when I checked in, and their meals were still on the table the next day. When I asked for an extra towel, they fetched it from their living quarters instead of a reception cupboard. The whole arrangement felt odd and uncomfortable. The glowing reviews saying you can park outside your room seem fake to me. I’ve never stayed at a motel where you couldn’t do that. Unless you want to pay to get sick, book somewhere else.

We were happy with our two-night stay and would gladly come back. The rooms were spacious, and the beds comfortable. It’s on the main road into town, though it can be a little hard to spot when driving from the city, so look out for the John Deere sign. Water to our room cut out now and then, but each interruption was brief. Apart from that, we found the accommodation pretty decent.

Getting luggage inside was easy since you can park right outside your room. We arrived late at night, and the staff had arranged keys for us and were warm and helpful, always smiling. The room was neat and clean, with plenty of useful things: an extra bed and blankets, towels for everyone, a small fridge with a milk packet, WiFi (though we didn’t use it), TV, kettle, little coffee and sugar sachets, an attached bathroom and toilet with small toiletries, and extra chairs. We had everything we could have asked for.

The reception staff were really friendly, and there was a lovely dog to greet us. The stay was comfortable and reasonably priced, so I’d definitely return. The layout is a little old, but they’re planning upgrades. There’s a tennis court on the property, BBQ facilities, and some awesome caves nearby.

The owners went above and beyond for us. They welcomed us with a lovely chat and let my girls meet and pat their dogs. When my 4yr old came down with gastro on the first night, they lent us big bags of Duplo and puzzles to keep the kids busy while we got through it. We felt looked after like family, and this is definitely our place to stay when we visit. It’s my second stay at the International. I love how roomy the rooms are and the beds, though the water isn’t drinkable, which is why I’m holding back a star for the rooms. If you’re prepared, it’s no biggy.
