Cockatoo Island

Even with rain over the weekend, we had a great time. The tent was small, but warm and really comfortable. There’s lots to see and do in a perfect location, and the ferry makes getting around very easy. On-site security helped us feel safe overnight. Bring your own cookware if you plan to make your own meals.

The views were amazing, and it was easy to get by ferry to Woolwich Pier Hotel and Sydney Rowers club at Abbotsford. The kitchen is laid out very well, with plenty of seats and boiling water available around the clock. Our tents were warm and cosy, but low and thin for older ladies, and one woman left. For our group of women over 70, the walk to the toilets was a bit too far at night, across wet grass and steps. The morning was miserable and wet in thick fog. There were also students from Canberra roaming around, loud, noisy and disrespectful, perhaps out of control. On the good side, we met delightful 15 year old students from Charters Towers Qld, boarding school pupils who were respectful and a credit to their staff and school.

Cockatoo Island is amazing. The accommodation is simple, a good option for a minimalist one-night stay. If you’re staying longer, you’ll need to bring extra essentials.

There’s a lot to explore here, and the ferry makes getting to the location easy. We felt safe overnight thanks to the on-site security. The tent was snug, but stayed comfortable and warm. We went on a cold, wet weekend, so the weather did dampen things, though we still had a great time. Bring your own cooking pots, utensils and plates if you’ll be catering for yourself.
