Establishment Hotel

This place was a nightmare. I was there for work and had a huge presentation the next day, but couldn't sleep at all. The cleaning crew's supply cupboards were beside my room, and people kept going in and out noisily. That was nothing compared with the nightclub music blasting and patrons yelling until 3 am. Even after it closed I still couldn't sleep. I was furious at the lack of soundproofing: I could hear everything from the rooms next door and above, as well as all the city noise. The lane location felt creepy and unsafe, there were no internal door locks for extra security, and the scent in the lobby and rooms was sickly and overpowering. The lighting in the rooms and bathroom was so bad I had to do my makeup under the fluorescent light in the wardrobe. I couldn't face a second night. I paid $1000 out of pocket to move to an actual five-star hotel and gave up the second night so I wouldn't have to spend another night in what felt like a house of horrors and mental torture experiment.

The staff are what made the stay memorable for me. They were warm and professional, and seemed to anticipate what guests might need, whether that meant helping someone to their room with full hands, sharing local tips, or getting a difficult dinner reservation. They didn't just stick to a script, and made me feel like a valued guest. The Establishment Hotel has a lot of character and intimacy, and feels like a refreshing change from generic skyscraper hotels. It's in a restored 19th-century building, with high ceilings, rustic textures, and a layout that makes each stay feel a little different. The design keeps the old character while adding a sophisticated, contemporary style. It has an intimate boutique feel, and the culinary spots right below are convenient. The Rocks and Sydney Harbour Bridge are also a short walk away. For me, it balances historical soul with modern luxury. The atmosphere is more like a private estate than a typical commercial hotel, and the building's corners all seem to have a story. If you want old-world charm, modern comfort, and friendly service in the city, this is a great example of boutique hospitality.

We loved how easy it was to get to the room, with nothing complicated, and appreciated the speakers. It was nice and quiet, and the room was eclectic, spacious, and fitted out really well, perfect for a romantic getaway. The lighting was good, the bathroom beautiful and had a bath, and there were lovely little soaps and soft, fluffy towels. Very comfortable. We'll be back!

The service was great, and I liked having a spacious room and the option to get breakfast delivered. But the noise would stop me from booking again. There was a big gap under the door, so every hallway sound came through, and club music from below vibrated through the room until after 3am on a Tuesday. I can only imagine what Friday or Saturday is like. I also missed having an extra lock on the inside of the door. I wouldn't call it a five-star hotel.
