Mad Monkey Coogee Beach Hostel

The beach is right there, but it’s beside Rusty’s Bar and gets noisy at night from traffic and people partying. If you want a quiet night, this probably isn’t the place. It’s a great location, but not for peace and comfort. The whole building felt cramped, from the tiny bathroom stalls to the lack of space. Reception is three flights of stairs up, sharing the kitchen, living, and dining area, which was a pain with luggage. There’s no air conditioning anywhere. They say they rely on the “ocean breeze,” but in my 12-bed dorm I couldn’t feel any at all. I expected bedroom windows for airflow, but there weren’t any. The only air came through the open door, which wasn’t enough, especially in summer. The beds squeak a lot, and on the bottom bunk I felt every little movement from the person above.

Anna M. (events), Elisa (housekeeping), and Lucy (reception) made a real difference. They were sociable, professional, and lovely with guests, helping everyone feel welcome and at ease. You can tell they care about their work. While traveling along the East Coast of Australia, I kept hearing people mention the great customer service here. That kind of reputation reflects the team. I had an amazing stay thanks in large part to the staff, and I’d absolutely recommend the place based on them alone.

I had a great time and would stay here again. I came for a holiday with a few friends and was really happy with the accommodation and the stay as a whole. Everyone on staff was kind, especially Mads, who was so sweet and made me feel welcome and safe the whole time. Feeling safe is the most important thing I look for in a place to stay.

The daily events gave the hostel a lot of character, from laid-back pancake nights to bigger evenings out at local Coogee bars like CBH. I’ve stayed here twice with friends, and the location, atmosphere, and especially the staff made both visits amazing. Viggo and Ruby💚 were so welcoming. They chatted with us at events, shared useful Sydney tips, and brought such warm energy everywhere. Even while cleaning rooms, they’d stop by smiling and ask how we were. They made leaving much harder, and I’ll miss them. Highly, highly recommend! 🌟
