The food, wine and cocktails were all divine, and the gentleman behind the bar really knows his craft. Marramarra has a lovely mix of seclusion and convenience: it’s 30 minutes north of Sydney, but the lodge can only be reached by boat, with a private 10-minute transfer from a nearby wharf. The setting on a little peninsula is peaceful, and the stand-alone rooms are spaced apart with no shared walls or views into other guests’ rooms. They face either sunrise or sunset, so everyone gets a view. There’s plenty to do, including kayaking, fishing and an oyster farm experience. Or just sit by the fire pit near the dining hall under the stars. The lodge is adults-only and holds around 30 guests at most, which makes it a great fit if you want to relax and unwind. The owners also mentioned that guests can book the whole place for a private wedding or function. It really is a hidden gem. I’m looking forward to coming back, and will try the day spa next time.

The location is stunning, the accommodation is very nice, and most of the staff were great. Still, at the price they’re aiming for, a few small things added up: no minibar restock, no snacks in the room, limited alcohol-free drinks for baby moons, just one wine by the glass, and trained bar staff only on Saturday night. It felt like corners were being cut. The lodge also wasn’t all-inclusive anymore, which disappointed us and other couples who’d stayed before. We paid a reopening offer of 50% off, but even at $1k a night it didn’t meet the luxury standard we expected for a place charging $2k+. There were teething issues that need attention. After we left what we thought was constructive feedback, the owner called us in a very aggressive way. That soured the stay, and I wouldn’t recommend it to friends or family.

The place itself has real potential. The accommodation, food and location were all outstanding, easily five-star quality. What let it down was the front-of-house service and management, which seemed disorganized and unprofessional. The female owner looked overwhelmed and, regrettably, seemed visibly intoxicated both nights, spending time at the bar instead of looking after guests. Some tables were left without water and service was delayed. Early teething problems happen, but the resort needs enough experienced staff, prompt table clearing and attentive service. Management has significant room to improve.

We’d stayed at Marramarra Lodge a few years ago, before the management changed, and it seems the operation has gone downhill since then. Our Australia Day long-weekend booking was cancelled less than 48 hours before arrival, leaving us very little chance to find another getaway so close to the holiday. It’s now April and we still haven’t received our refund. Customer service has been appalling, with one broken promise after another. The last-minute cancellation, poor follow-up and missing refund have been deeply disappointing.

My wife brought me here for my 30th, and we had a fantastic two-night stay. The views are incredible, but the food was the real standout. The room and facilities were beautiful, and the staff and owners were lovely to deal with. They even made food and drinks that weren’t on the menu, nothing seemed like too much trouble. A luxurious little getaway, only 20 minutes from home. Such a hidden gem.
