The rooms and shared spaces were kept clean, and Nate’s Place was really convenient for getting around Sydney. It seems well suited to backpackers or anyone after a relaxed, affordable place to stay. I liked the friendly, easygoing atmosphere. It was simple to meet other people and settle in, and the staff were helpful and approachable without hovering. There was a nice social feel while still being laid-back. I had a great stay and would come back.

Ruth, the manager, deserves a special mention. She was kind, attentive and helpful, and made people feel at home. The hostel also put on plenty of fun activities, which made it easier to make friends. The rooftop was a real highlight for unwinding, chatting and taking in the city atmosphere. Inside, the common area felt welcoming too. Everything, including the kitchen, was clean and well organized, and it was easy to cook and spend time with other guests. I had a fantastic time here.

The view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge from my girls’ dorm was beautiful, and the beds were really comfortable. I was travelling alone for a holiday and to see the city, so the hostel’s daily activities made meeting people easy. Thanks to Ruth at reception for making me feel welcome and helping me find somewhere to buy souvenirs. I’d love to return someday.

The lack of flexibility made an already difficult stay worse. I asked several times for the air conditioning to be switched on, but nothing happened and nobody offered another solution. Staff seemed cold and unwilling to make even a small effort, and guest comfort didn’t seem to matter to them. I’m Muslim and was observing Ramadan, so I asked if I could keep some food in my room to eat before sunrise. They refused outright, despite my explaining why I needed it. I understand the rule against eating in rooms, but there was no willingness to accommodate my situation. The kitchen only opens at 6am, too late for me, so I couldn’t use it and couldn’t keep food in my room either. It makes no sense. This was one of the worst hostel stays I’ve had. The experience was terrible from beginning to end, and I absolutely can’t recommend the place.

Ruth, Doro, Ellie and Gaia at reception were so welcoming and accommodating. The rooms were always clean, and there were great events every night that made it easy to meet people from all over the world. I stayed at Nate’s place and also volunteered there for two months. The other volunteers were wonderful and helped make my time in Sydney really enjoyable. I’d highly recommend staying here, even for just a couple of nights.
