Aneeki Ski Lodge

The lodge is up quite a climb from road level, with lots of stairs, so bringing a lot of gear means quite a haul. The closest car park is 1km away, and the bus down the hill, which runs every 10 minutes, is essential at this location. Still, the shared kitchen, lounge, dining area and bathrooms all worked well and never felt too crowded. The rooms are small but comfortable, with a great view of the snow groomers working the slopes at night. The fireplace is huge and brilliantly toasty, and Manager Sandy was welcoming and helpful.

We stayed as a couple in February for the MTB park, and the lodge made everything easy and comfortable. Ian, the caretaker, left unexpected basics in the kitchen, including milk, toast, cereal and instant coffee, and there was even a dishwasher. The views are amazing, and it’s clean, beautiful, affordable, well organized and flexible. There’s a terrace, bbq, board games and a chimney too. If you’re not sure where to book in Thredbo, this is the best shared place.

For the price, it’s a decent place to crash, especially if you don’t plan to spend much time at the lodge. Cooking for ourselves was handy, and bedding was provided, though the pillow was bad. The caretaker deserves 5/5: he cleaned the bathrooms and kitchen while everyone was out, swapped stories and was generally friendly at the end of the day. The rooms themselves are cramped and kind of garbage, and this is one of the furthest lodges from the village, which is a pain after a day out. Other places offer more and do it better.

My son and I had the place to ourselves just before the school holidays started, apart from Ian. He’s much more than a caretaker, he’s a genuine Thredbo guide and an interesting character with plenty of great stories from a well lived life. It’s a lovely little lodge with old school ski charm. We’ll come back, and book directly next time.
