Dinner at the Charles is always a special occasion, with thoughtful, beautiful presentation and surprising flavour combinations that give everyone something to talk about. The service feels personal, and the dishes arrive at a comfortable pace without making you feel rushed. The staff are obliging and happy to chat about flavours or dishes, and even call a taxi. Nothing is too much trouble. I’d absolutely recommend an evening or a meal at the Charles. Unforgettable.

We were happy with everything during our one-night stay. The hotel has been renovated to a modern standard and was impeccably clean, and the front desk service was lovely. Having several free car chargers and plenty of parking was a great bonus. We could charge overnight and then be on our way.

We tried The Charles restaurant for the first time for its Valentine’s four-course set menu and were bitterly disappointed. At $150 per person plus drinks, the food was okay but nothing special and didn’t justify the price. The service was the worst part. We waited 20 minutes after sitting down before anyone asked if we wanted water or a drink from the menu. Despite plenty of staff in a fairly small restaurant, the wait staff seemed unprofessional and amateurish. They took things away without asking if we’d finished, set items down without saying anything, and took my partner’s drink before she was done. I ordered a beer and confirmed that with the waiter, but got a ginger beer instead. There was also leftover dinner from previous customers on the table lamp, which was off-putting. Food was fine, but not a wow and not as good as Wagga’s other fine dining options for the price. SPARE and Magpies Nest are far better, with more reasonable value for the quality. Overall, poor experience due to the service. I can’t comment on the accommodation because we didn’t stay there.

The Charles’ five-course tasting menu with matched wines is a phenomenal fine dining experience. The delicate presentation, contrasting textures and surprising flavours are all there, and you might briefly think you’re in Melbourne.

The staff were cheerful and helpful, and the room was a decent size with a comfortable bed and TV. Being able to charge my car overnight on the free EV charger was what really made the stay worthwhile for me. The surface looked clean, though it could use a deeper clean, and the fittings felt worn. A couple of broken bedside lamps took away from the atmosphere they seemed to be aiming for. It’s above the usual regional motel, which may explain the extra cost, but it’s definitely not four star.
