Peppermint Ridge Retreat

Loved the eco-friendly house, fireplace, Nature Loo and chooks. Great views across Dentrecastreux Channel.

We had a lovely two-night stay at Peppermint Ridge and would happily come back when we’re in the area again. The place is gorgeous and felt warm and welcoming the whole time. I’m curious how comfortable it gets during one of those rare hot Tassie summer days, but while we were there it was just right.

The distant views toward the ocean channel and valley were pretty, but the setting around the house felt ordinary. We were extremely disappointed. Calling this a top 50 home in Tasmania seems inaccurate to us, and we wouldn’t put it among the top 1000. It’s listed as luxury, though the accommodation and facilities felt basic. The property seemed over 30 years old and hadn’t had much upkeep or upgrading. There’s a basic kitchen, a DROP toilet, no wifi or air conditioning, just a fan and electric bar heater. Phone reception was poor, and the TV was very small with no cable, so there isn’t much to do at night. We didn’t use the indoor wood fire because we both have hay fever, and the house smelled of smoke when we arrived. Another thing to plan around: the local café closes from Sunday evening until Wednesday morning, and the restaurant stays closed until Thursday morning.

We stayed here in the middle of a Tasmanian winter and were warm and comfortable. The hosts were friendly and thoughtful, and the place is so quiet and relaxing. It’s well placed for exploring the food and wine south of Hobart, and just a few minutes from the Bruny Island ferry. The views are the most beautiful we’ve had anywhere we’ve stayed. We’d gladly return, and hope we get to.
