Hostel Srebrenica

The hostel was clean, comfortable, and really quiet, with helpful advice from the staff. It's about a 15 minute walk into town, where, oddly enough, there's a supermarket with everything. The memorial is about an hour away on foot if you feel like the exercise. I got there because my host in Sarajevo was driving overnight to Belgrade and offered me a lift through Srebrenica. He called Milos to say we'd arrive at midnight, and Milos said that was fine. We actually turned up at 12.45 am. Milos greeted us and offered the tired driver a free night at the hostel. That's the kind of person he is. The next day, Milos and I spent hours chatting about all sorts of things. He's a lawyer and speaks English better than we do.

Milos and Bosa's hospitality was just as warm each time I visited, whether I came with friends or with my family and young kids. I've been to Hostel Srebenica in the summers of 2013, 2015, and 2022. The place had improved on every visit, with an upgraded stairway, redone bathrooms, and a lovely covered lounge with an outdoor kitchen. The kids had a great time in the garden with the cats and dog, and swimming in the Drina at Rajska Plaza near Bratunac. There’s plenty to do around the area: see the growing exhibition at the memorial complex in Potocari, walk among the big mining machines and vehicles in the park in Milici, or head up the large tower for a beautiful view of the town. You can even have drinks up there if you ask the cafe staff. Visegrad and the mountain train ride at Mokra Gora are also very nice.

Keeping the memory alive by visiting Srebrenica matters. Hostel Srebrenica is one of the town's few places to stay, and it’s a nice, new hostel with the things travellers need. It sits at the edge of town, next to the bus station, which isn’t operating at the moment. That's at the end if you arrive from the mountains, or the beginning if you're coming from Tuzla/Zvornik.

We arrived a day late and gave them very little notice, but they were understanding and didn't charge us for the night we'd originally booked. The owner was so lovely, bringing cake and coffee when we arrived, then fresh berries and more coffee after checkout while we waited for our bus. The hostel is spotless, and the garden out back is beautiful, with a stream. I'd really recommend staying here! :)
