We liked how local the area felt, and the bus service made getting around easy. We rented a car for seven of our ten nights, but the yellow buses were frequent and cheap. There’s a big supermarket about 2 miles away and a smaller, pricier one about a mile in the other direction. For food, the local place at the end of the road had great fish cakes, fried fish, and potted fish at reasonable prices. There’s also a Barbadian-Asian restaurant next door, but we didn’t try it because we enjoyed the local food so much. Rum and Banks beer are the cheaper drinks, so gin and tonic fans might want to take a break. The apartment was clean and tidy, though it’s clearly a budget place. We came for the beaches, not an expensive hotel room. Chandra gave us a warm welcome and useful tips for our first trip to Barbados. The air conditioning worked well, the shower was fine, and we used the drinking water and kitchen to make our main meal five or six times. Nights were quiet, and the veranda around the main building, with all its trees and shrubs, was a pleasant spot to sit. The dogs were no trouble. If you like dogs, they like you, and if you don’t, they keep away. There’s a private beach across the road, plus another local beach a little farther along with a couple of bars and food spots. I swam a bit farther up the coast and reached Sandy Lane beach, where the celebrities and their apartments are. I know which area I prefer. We liked the apartments enough that we’re already planning to return to Angler Apartment’s. It’s unpretentious, clean, a little quirky, and has a very friendly host in a great location.

Angler is the only place I want to stay now. I usually visit Barbados at least once a year, and after trying other hotels, I came back here for five weeks. The owner is helpful and easy to deal with, especially when you need advice about getting around. It’s a lovely place for the budget, with a beautiful beach and a setting that’s friendly to nature. I got back from Barbados two weeks ago and already know I’ll want to stay here again.

The room had WiFi and air conditioning included, a phone for free local calls, basic kitchen gear, and clean towels. Breakfast cost extra, $ 14 USD per person. We tried it once: two scrambled eggs, a chicken sausage, ketchup, a few watermelon pieces, tea or coffee, and an extra buttered toast. Chandra was friendly but followed the rules closely. She suggested ordering fast food from Cheffette or Hopscotch and arranged a taxi when we left. The place feels worn out and needs updating to justify the $ 89 USD per night price. Breakfast wasn’t included, either. Angler is on Barbados’s official list of hotels chosen for quarantine after arrival. We booked through Agoda, but the booking never reached the hotel because their partnership had ended, even though the hotel was still listed there. I’d avoid booking it through Agoda. If you can find better value for money, go for that.

The rooms were reasonably clean, and housekeeping did a good job, though not consistently. That was one of the few positives. The rooms are old and run down, and the appliances were in bad shape. The stove couldn’t boil water, so we had to use the microwave. The windows let in a lot of noise, and we couldn’t figure out how to close or block them. The WiFi didn’t reach our room, and I only found that out after agreeing to the $3 per day fee. There was no option to pay for just a couple of days. The dogs were a serious issue for me. No one mentioned that the owner kept four or five dogs at the apartments, and they met us at the gate before any staff did. I have allergies, and they made my stay difficult. They also barked at random hours through the night, making it hard to sleep. My wife usually isn’t bothered by dogs, but even she struggled with this group. Finding the place was a hassle. The map marker was wrong: the property is on the EAST side of H1, about 300 meters up Clark Road No. 1. Even our taxi driver couldn’t find it at first and had to call the owner. The listing also made it look like the property was on the beach. There is beach access, but it’s about a quarter mile away, down very steep, dangerous steps that aren’t suitable for young children or anyone with limited mobility. You get a key at check-in for the locked beach gate. On our first visit, the gate was unlocked. We went in, enjoyed the beach, and found it still unlocked when we came back. Other people were there, so we left it as we found it. Apparently someone had stolen the lock, but the owner blamed us because she’d seen us go down that day and insisted we pay. Expect to be charged for anything that goes wrong. The extra-cost breakfast also made my wife sick. She started feeling better after we began cooking for ourselves. I was very disappointed. Look elsewhere in Barbados if you value your sanity.

A decent place to crash in Barbados if you’re watching your budget. The area is expensive, and the hotels cost even more, so the price here was great if you’re okay with an average-looking room. I didn’t like that dogs were out on the patio, though one ran toward me like it might charge.
