The TV in my room, which he said worked, didn't get a single channel. The bathroom sink backed up every time I used it, and there was a dirty, hairy bar of soap in the bathroom when I arrived. Those were part of a stay that left me feeling uncomfortable and watched. There were locks everywhere: a chain and padlock on the fence before the house, supposedly for safety, even though someone could just hop over it; a padlocked second door inside, which he left open because he didn't want his curtains messed up; another locked door upstairs leading to a small porch; bars on every window; and two sliding locks on the front entrance. I felt the chain at the fence might let him hear people coming and going. One night I got back early and fell asleep, then woke hungry and took a taxi to get food. When I returned, all his lights were on. After my driver left, he came out and said, “Wow, you were out late tonight!” I was an adult, and when I came and went was none of his concern. He went into my room, too. I ran out of toilet paper and forgot to tell him as I was leaving. When I came back that day, a new roll was outside my door. I hadn't told him I needed it, so I wondered how he knew. At checkout he again brought up that he'd rented a car, although I never asked to use it or told him to rent one. I don't know why he assumed I'd rely on him to get around. I don't go on vacation to spend all my money, especially on someone I felt was greedy. While I was flying home, he messaged me on WhatsApp saying I'd left a winter coat in the closet. It wasn't mine, it belonged to someone else. Either he didn't check the rooms or was lonely and trying to start a conversation. He then wondered who it belonged to and whether it was a man's or woman's. I was halfway across the ocean on a plane. I didn't care about a coat that wasn't mine. I blocked him, since I have no plans to stay there again and wouldn't recommend it.

The owner apparently wasn't happy with the full review I posted on TripAdvisor about this dump. He called me from another number, yelling, so I hung up. I'll attach photos of the filthy, hairy soap bar that was in my bathroom when I arrived, the nasty garbage can he expects you to leave your shoes beside, and more of the inside of this place. I think the four and five star reviews are fake. Stay away from this man!

The price is reasonable and the location is okay, but this was the worst accommodation I've experienced. You look for comfort, security and privacy in a hotel or guest house, and Winchelsea had none of that. The owner was nosy: he searched my room when I went out, questioned my guests, came in without knocking, told me to close the windows, and wouldn't let me bring my shoes into the room I'd booked. He wasn't professional. With so many rules and things you couldn't do, it felt like being in jail. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who wants some freedom. After that bad experience, I went to another small guest house near Miami Beach in Oistins, Barbados. It was much cheaper and had no hassle at all. It's called Romans Guest house. Do NOT book Winchelsea. On a scale from 1 to 10, I'd give it -1.

The host was extremely hospitable and knew how to make a guest feel welcome. The place was comfortable, accommodating, and in a perfect location.
