De Statie

The room looked spacious and nicely built, but it hadn't been cared for well. The furniture was worn, there was no soap, and nearly all the electrical outlets had been disabled. The one working outlet I found looked questionable, and after a whole night my phone hadn't even charged to 25%, though it normally takes two hours to fill up. The dining rooms, inside and out, were nicely decorated. The service was another matter: it took ten minutes to get help, and after we ordered drinks, staff made drinks for themselves while ours didn't arrive until the food did. A tiny glass of orange juice, watered down and loaded with ice, cost 6 euros. Dinner was expensive too, and the food was extremely salty and prepared with so much butter. There wasn't much choice beyond meat, which is a problem if you have allergies, dietary restrictions, or certain beliefs. Breakfast cost 17.50 per person, but what was offered was stale little rolls, old mini croissants, and Nutella. Cheese, meat, yogurt, and milk were sitting unrefrigerated in the sun. The orange juice had fruit flies on top, which the young woman who eventually appeared scooped out now and then. It would help to have someone there to greet guests, and to keep the food chilled or prepare breakfast packs on request. This was unappetizing and seemed like a health concern. The two attached photos show the full buffet, not just our table. You can also see part of the men's bathroom in the background, where the door had been removed.

The menu changes with the seasons and makes good use of fresh local ingredients. Everyone was polite, the service was good, and prices seemed fair for the area. I especially recommend the Damme Blanche for dessert, you'll love it. Really good restaurant.

The room was the letdown: it was small and too hot, and the fan barely helped. The window only opened a little. I liked the breakfast, and dinner tasted good, though it was very expensive and I'm not sure it was worth the price.

It took some effort to find, but dinner here was worth the search. A local friend had pointed us toward the place. I had the venison and really enjoyed it, and dessert was good too. There's a lot of game stuff around. I'd come back for dinner.
