De Verloren Gernoare

The chilli is lovely, and the toilets were the cleanest I’ve ever used. The hosts were the best, with friendly locals giving the old-fashioned bar and restaurant a great atmosphere. It’s right in the town centre, a minute from the trams and trains, yet there was no noise. A real treat, and I hope to visit again. The beach is worth seeing too, it’s immaculately kept.

A relaxed place to wait for the Flixbus back to London from De Panne. In summer the terrace is nice, and they offer light meals plus a large range of beers and other drinks. It’s a cash-only pub, with no cards accepted. There’s a cash machine beside the station, on the left if you’re looking at the station from the pub. A lovely couple run the place.

We walked into the bar ready to buy a beer, and asked the owner if he spoke English. He replied in perfect English, very rudely, “do you speak Dutch?” This is a very touristy place, and we were there as paying customers. My friend knows a little Dutch and tried asking whether we could pay by card, which is legally required in Belgium. The owner just put his hands up and said “nonono.” We left straight away, stunned by how unfriendly he was. I’m glad the Flemish speakers had a nice stay, but that only confirms the owner’s prejudices.

Really friendly, and the breakfast was lovely. We’re English, so we know a good brekkie. Perfect experience, and we’ll be back. ***** stars
