The best part for us was how calm it all felt, with a lovely open field right outside our window. My wife, our son and I stayed at Het Rooj for a week and really enjoyed it. Breakfast was good, especially the homemade jams. Our 13 year old said they ought to sell that jam at the market. If you need a break from a hectic life and some peace and quiet, we’d happily recommend Het Rooj.

We set out in our hiking boots for a few hours and passed Horst Castle, taking in the region along its walking paths and quiet country lanes. The photos we came home with are a lovely reminder of the stay. We’d arrived quite late on a gloomy, rainy evening, and Petra gave us a warm welcome. Our room was stylish, warm and cozy, and a nice bath followed by a good night’s sleep was just what we needed. In the morning, blue skies and a beautiful panorama greeted us through the window. Before our brisk Sunday walk, we were getting hungry, and breakfast was laid out with fresh fruit, organic yogurt, juice, coffee, tea, pastries, breads and rolls, cheese, charcuterie, milk, and Petra’s delicious homemade jam. We were very well looked after and enjoyed it all.

You can walk straight out from Het Rooj, which is right by a walking junction, and there’s a medieval moated castle just a short distance away. The setting is wonderfully peaceful. Breakfast was delicious, and the friendly hostess was glad to suggest nearby restaurants. Every luxury is provided. Highly recommended.

We wanted to book this B&B for our wedding night, so we went to see it. After that, we heard nothing back from our emails or calls. When we called again, she curtly said she didn’t want us at her B&B because she wasn’t up for it and felt our expectations would stress her out. We weren’t asking for anything special. We’d never stayed in a B&B and only wanted another meeting to find out how things should be arranged. Is that too much to expect? I don’t think so. If a place gets good reviews, it’s normal for people to have expectations, as she put it. This really wasn’t okay, and based on this experience I can’t recommend it.

A great base in a lovely region. There are nice places to discover on a bike, and plenty of walks too.
