I really liked having the spa and gym to myself in the evening and again the next morning. The hours make that easy, with the facilities open late and early, and the outdoor hot tub was especially relaxing. My room was spacious, a comfortable temperature, and had a very comfy bed. Breakfast was so good I went back for a second plate, even though I normally skip it. There’s the usual buffet plus a delicious à la carte menu, with fresh orange juice and smoothies. Dinner and breakfast service were both great, and the reception team were always helpful. Everyone was friendly when I arrived too. Two small ideas: a couple of quick, simple options like a club sandwich or burger on the dinner menu would be handy for guests who just want a quick bite. I did have the steak, though, and it was beautifully cooked even though steak usually isn’t my thing. A jug of iced cucumber and mint or lemon water in the spa would also be a nice touch.

We spent hours enjoying the spa, especially the sauna, steam room, indoor pool, and outdoor jacuzzi. They can bring drinks to you there, too. The staff were welcoming throughout, and even made our little pup feel special. He had a great time running in the nearby forest, through the snow and mud. We ate at Le Ciel for breakfast and dinner both days. Breakfast was huge, and I’d recommend the açaí bowl and French toast, with bubbles too. Dinner was just as lovely, with a good range of fish, meat, pasta, and sides. The Caesar salad on our first night was perfect, as were the oysters and steak the next evening. It was my partner’s birthday, and they made it feel special with a little firework. We had a wonderful stay and are already looking forward to coming back.

The garden view from my room was so peaceful. I think I booked the least expensive category, but the room was surprisingly spacious. It was in the annex, “The Villa,” which was perfectly fine, and the well-lit path to the main building felt quite romantic. La Source was a highlight. I had a 4-course dinner, though all the amuses-bouches made it feel more like 8 courses. The food was beautiful to look at and delicious, especially with the wines they chose. Rob and Maddy clearly know their craft and enjoy it, and they made the evening lovely. Lunch at Le Ciel was delightful too, in a stunning setting. Service really stood out all through the visit. An older gentleman who was heading out helped me with my coat and looked after it the whole time. Such a lovely gesture. I also appreciated the little stool for bags in the restaurants, the turndown service with curtains closed and a treat on the bed, the petit four trolley at La Source, and the note by the bed. Breakfast had loads of variety and was all tasty, and there were complimentary smoothies at the Shiseido Institute. The pillows weren’t quite right for me, one too firm and large, the other too flat and small, though I’m picky about pillows. The spa didn’t feel as luxurious as the rest of the hotel either. The pool was quite cold and the green lighting was strange. La Butte aux Bois really understands service, style, and fine dining. I’ve stayed at several 5-star hotels, including in England, which is famous for hospitality, and this is the best one for me so far.

A lovely family escape at this spa hotel. The staff are really friendly, and it’s welcoming to both children and pets. The restaurant food is delicious. Absolutely recommended!
