There was plenty of crockery, glasses, and kitchenware, though the combination oven was a bit of a challenge if you weren’t used to it. The accommodation had a lounge, kitchen, and dining area, plus a large bedroom with a king-sized bed and bunks that could be screened off. The bathroom, off the bedroom, was roomy, with a shower cubicle and vanity unit. We were welcomed by a friendly host. Outside, there was private off-road parking and a small sunny seating area accessed through French doors. We could also keep our bikes under cover. The complimentary Belgian beer was much appreciated after a day’s ride. My reservations were that the stairs might be difficult for anyone less mobile, and Maldegem was farther away than we’d expected.

The host was great, and the place was lovely to stay in. It was clean, warm, quiet, and relaxing, while still being close to everything.

We were lucky to visit when the place had been open for less than a couple of months. Everything was immaculate, the service was excellent, and the food was great. The gardens and surrounding area were beautifully maintained too. We wished we could stay longer and hope to visit again soon.

The house was well maintained, and we spent ten fantastic days there. On arrival, we found a big “Welcome” on the table with two delicious raspberry tarts beside it. November was cold, so we soon lit the lovely pellet stove and got nice and warm and cozy. It’s a great base for day trips. Bruges is a must, with lots of history inside the city walls, lovely facades, and Minnewater for anyone feeling romantic. TroostBaar is a relaxed spot for coffee. The Zwin reminded us a little of the Slufter on Texel, but felt different and maybe even more beautiful. The visitor center has had a lot of care put into it, and the homemade shrimp croquettes are highly recommended. There’s roadwork on several roads at the moment, so the easiest route is to take the highway all the way to Knokke, then follow the signs to the Zwin. Sluis was a quiet fortified town in November, with lots of photogenic corners, so bring a camera. Aardenburg was almost deserted at that time of year; ‘s Lands Welvaren offers reasonably priced lunch and friendly service. There are good walks nearby too, around Moerhuizen and along the canals north or south of the house. Wear sturdy walking shoes.
