We chose holiday home Den Ast as a base to visit cousins around Ninove, and it couldn’t have worked better. The living room’s big picture window looks out over cattle, fields, sunsets and Neigembos, and a visiting peacock made for a memorable surprise. The house is tastefully furnished, with a comfortable bed and everything we needed to make meals and snacks. There’s plenty to explore nearby. We enjoyed the marked windmill and desert day walks from the website, and the walk around Neigembos is close by too. The dairy farm is a five-minute walk away for ice cream, and we spotted alpacas through the roadside shrubs beyond it. OKay is a five-minute drive for groceries. We also visited Gaasbeek Castle, about 20 minutes away, and enjoyed the castle, museum garden tour and grounds trails. Lunch at Graaf and ice cream at Krijmerie across the road were delicious. The house also makes a convenient base for day trips to the Belgium coast and Ghent. After our wonderful 10 day stay, what we’ll remember most is Ilse’s warm welcome and the conversations we had with her. She and Pieter share a beautiful place in the countryside, and Ilse was always there to answer questions. We looked forward to our evening walks along the country roads every day. We’ll cherish this visit. Thank you, Ilse and Pieter, for making us feel so welcome!
