B&B Aquabello

They cancelled my appointment on the very day I was meant to arrive, despite having had two weeks to let me know. It was meant to be a Valentine’s gift, and they didn’t seem to care. They could at least have offered a discount or some other compensation. That’s why I’m giving two stars.

Aquabello is just outside the city centre, so pairing a visit with time in Roeselare makes sense. The wellness area has two units that can be joined into one large space, with a sauna, hammam, jacuzzi, open rain showers, a heated pool, TV, fireplace and minibar in a modern setting. You can also book different massages, or even learn massage basics, which I haven’t come across at another wellness place. Top notch. There’s a stylish bed and breakfast too, with a king-size bed, flatscreen TV, free wifi, iPod dock, minibar, coffee and tea, and a safe for your belongings. It was a dazzling experience.

The rooms were immaculate, but the place felt cold, sterile and characterless, with white-coated masseurs. It felt more like a recovery centre than a cosy B&B. We wanted to leave, and the owner said our booking fee would be refunded. After we got back to the UK, they charged the full amount anyway, going back on that promise. We booked what sounded like a lovely night with a swimming pool for our young children. On arrival, we were told the pool was fully booked for our stay, and in any case only two people can use it at a time. The property is at the end of a huge trading estate, with little to do nearby unless you enjoy walking around a concrete jungle. It’s about as far from a B&B as you could get. Be warned.
