What stood out most was the welcome. The gentleman who received us was so kind and flexible, and even let us use a separate room for our conference calls. Breakfast was a good start to the day, especially the Nespresso coffee. Bistro Hotel Wellness Horenbecca is in a quiet little village, set a bit away from the main road, so it’s peaceful. The “Wellness” here felt more like mental well-being from the calm atmosphere than a spa with a pool. The building is showing its age, though. The rooms are simple, cozy and clean, spread across two buildings, and you’ll need to bring your own hairdryer. There’s NO AIR COND! My room looked out toward the cemetery behind the church, which suited the tranquil feel. The only small hassle was work underway to separate black and white water, part of activity happening across Belgium.

What my family and I experienced was very disappointing, even if some of the rooms may be good. We booked a premium room through Expedia for 2 nights at 378 euro, and I left within an hour to find somewhere better. The website and its photos didn’t match what we found, and the site seems to show many of the same rooms in different styles. None reflected reality. The loft room was reached by narrow stairs with no handrails, which even my young children struggled with. The decor and finish felt tired and dated, far below what I’d expect for that price. The bathroom drawers had hair in them. Upstairs, the window seemed like a health hazard because young children could easily climb out. There were also huge spikes above the bunk bed. I wouldn’t let a child sleep there, since jumping could easily put a hole in their head. Construction nearby meant we couldn’t park close to the site. That wasn’t a major issue, but it was a pain not to be able to park outside. I’m also disappointed by how the owner responds to complaints on this site. From the replies I’ve read, it seems they argue with people instead of accepting that a problem might exist. People raise an issue because they’ve experienced one. The owner should reflect on that and improve. How a complaint is handled says something about a business and its character. So far, what I’ve read hasn’t given me confidence in the owner’s standing, and I feel the end product is being grossly misrepresented.

At the restaurant, we weren’t given a drinks menu with prices. The next day we noticed a bottle of water had been charged at 7.60 euro, and we were billed for 4 drinks even though we’d only ordered 2. That doesn’t feel fair, and I can’t recommend the place. I stayed one night and the room had no heating, so it was freezing all evening. I mentioned it to the owner the next morning and got no particular reaction.

The bed was comfortable, breakfast was good, and the area was quiet and clean. But for 119,00 euro a night, I expected more in the room. It had no decorations or anything to make it cozy, just a bed, dresser, curtains, and a TV with only 3 of the 8 channels working. A kettle for tea or coffee, or even a welcome note, would have been nice. There was no shampoo, conditioner, or shower gel, and nowhere to hang a bathrobe or clothes. A cup for rinsing your mouth after brushing would’ve helped, too. The shower kept stopping every 20 seconds, so you had to press the button over and over for a proper wash. Maybe the hotel is trying to save water, but I don’t think this is the way to do it. We also had to ask for a TV remote because there wasn’t one in the room, and the owner seemed very careless about it. WiFi was advertised, but we had none in our room and the connection in the main area was poor. I don’t mind paying for a hotel room, but this one definitely wasn’t worth 119,00 euro. Very disappointing.

Room #11 had a big terrace overlooking the garden, with comfy sunbeds where we could soak up the sun and listen to the birds. We also had a two-person jacuzzi and sauna out there, plus a large steam room downstairs with showers and a salt scrub table. It was summer, so we didn’t use those facilities, but they’d be a nice reason to return in winter. The bed was really comfortable and the bathroom had a good rain showerhead. We booked at the last minute with a friend during the Beer Fest in Oudenaard, and it was a peaceful break from all the partying. The owners were super friendly and made us feel welcome. Breakfast was a nice continental spread, with the option to eat outside on the terrace. There’s plenty of parking right in front and a hiking path across the street through the fields. I’d highly recommend it and would stay again if I’m ever in the area.
