We left early, and the place was a huge letdown. The photos made it look better than it was. There were about 15 dead and live flies in each room, and we could hear rats in the ceiling. The fridge was very hot outside, only lukewarm inside, and its door wouldn't stay shut. It could swing open with a breath of wind. When we collected the key, we heard about a list of rules that hadn't been mentioned, including no jacuzzi after 10 p.m. and having to keep track of our own gas and electricity. A lot of kitchen utensils and cleaning supplies were missing too. Heating the jacuzzi took six hours, and we were charged for the energy straight away, which was ridiculous. Around 6 p.m. we were loud for a minute; by the time a neighbor came into the house yelling at us in French, we'd already gone quiet. It felt absurd and we were very intimidated. We reported hygiene problems, including empty alcohol bottles in a cupboard, mold in a bucket, and a dirty spoon with yogurt and mold under a sofa cushion, but nobody responded. It ruined the holiday mood and we had to cut the trip short.

We did have a nice vacation, but the cottage wasn't why. Most of the dishes were dirty, so we ended up washing nearly everything by hand. The jacuzzi was dirty too, and I think its filter wasn't working because the water didn't get cleaner. We used it anyway, then just took a quick shower. The house carries every sound. We even had to sign an agreement about making too much noise, despite being by a busy road and hearing both neighbors' dogs bark often. Good thing our dog didn't bark, or it could have turned into a back-and-forth.

The ground floor bedrooms were full of mold, the showers sprayed everywhere, and the jacuzzi water was dirty. It was cold when we arrived, so we had to spend a whole day heating it at our own expense. Scandalous.

What a terrible week. Mice, cockroaches, and other creatures were around, and the smell was awful. Switching on the bathroom light brought a racket like a plane taking off, probably from a fan with its motor in the closet in my upstairs room. Sleep was almost impossible. There were clumps of someone else's hair stuck to a shower wall, and I felt dirty the whole time. Just awful.

We were gone after two days. Everything was dirty, flies were everywhere, lots of things were broken, and there was nothing to clean with. We also thought there was a good chance of rats. The one positive was that the house wasn't falling apart.
