Chez Phil

We got there a little after 1, which was lucky since lunch service ends at 2. In September, it was one of the few nearby places open on a weekday. The food was perfectly decent, though nothing fancy. Staff were friendly and accommodating, but the bar can't be seen from the outdoor tables, so getting their attention was a little tricky. Fine if you just want a meal and somewhere to sit for a bit.

The owner and the two women who served dinner our first evening were really friendly, and breakfast was simple but there was enough. I had the renovated single room, which was just right for one person: very clean, with a great mattress, a modern TV, and a private toilet and shower. The shower was small, but the water quality was better than in some hotels. It faced the street and could get noisy, though my earplugs made that no problem. Even with temperatures above 30 degrees outside, the room wasn't too hot. We nearly didn't book after seeing reviews elsewhere, and there weren't many options left that weekend because of the lovely weather. I'm glad we chose Chez Phil. Very good value for money.

We only stayed for a beer and left without having dinner. The beer selection was good enough to earn the second star. Otherwise, what a gloomy place: it's a café, restaurant and friture, but looks more like a laundromat. Avoid it if you can.

The staff were very friendly and the food was fine, but I won't be coming back. There were dozens of dead flies on the windowsill, as if they'd been there all summer or longer, and live ones kept getting swatted away while we ate. Nobody on staff reacted to it. A restaurant has to be clean.
