The natural setting and location are just perfect, and the staff are polite and friendly. English is difficult for them, as they speak Bulgarian and a little Turkish, but they still do their best to be kind and helpful. For the drive there, watch for the small signs along the road. You can also ask local people in Turkish or Bulgarian, and they’ll help. It’s a wonderful spot to come and unwind.

We stopped for lunch only, so I can speak just about the restaurant, not the hotel. The portions were big, especially the parlenka, a traditional Bulgarian bread about the size of a large pizza, and the shopska salad was generous too. The flavors could be better, though we were satisfied overall. The lovely grounds, beautiful view and relaxed atmosphere were a welcome break after a tiring climb in the nearby mountains.

If you're after fancy meals or snobbish furniture, this probably won't meet those inflated expectations. What it does offer around Kardjali dam is a great mix of sightseeing, ancient history and simple, unpretentious lodging, at a price that suited us. The people will look after you as you look after them. Ancient rock sanctuaries, fortresses, rugged scenery and lots of wildlife make the area feel like a spiritual escape.

We didn't stay overnight, just paused here for a bit, but we fell for the place. The grounds are huge, green and very tidy, and the staff were incredibly friendly. We'll definitely be back.
