There’s plenty of all-inclusive food, and our room was spacious and clean. The TV had channels in Bulgarian, Romanian, English, Italian, French, German, and Russian. The beach is a five-minute walk if you ask reception for the chip bracelet that opens the shortcut gate. There are indoor and outdoor pools, so it seems suitable for families with kids. The main drawback was the broken toilet. They sent someone to repair it, but he couldn’t.

The pools were a real plus, especially the heated indoor one. In early June the outdoor water was still a chilly +22°C, while it was +30°C outside. There are three outdoor pools, including one for children, plus plenty of loungers and umbrellas. The public beach is about five minutes away on foot, though the hotel doesn’t have its own beach. We stayed from May 31 to June 8, and the staff were kind, helpful, and attentive. Rooms were cleaned daily and kept in good shape. Ours had a small sofa, a private balcony, and a rack for drying towels and swimsuits. Higher floors have lovely sea views. The mattress was comfortable, but the pillows were too soft for me. The hairdryer was the biggest annoyance: an old, weak model that took an hour to dry my thick, long hair. Its plastic handle also got hot, so I had to stop and let it cool, which felt potentially unsafe. The buffet had a satisfying range of meat, fish, and vegetables. Bar drinks were standard but decent, and the ice cream served from noon to 5 PM was a hit. The animation team kept things lively, too. Most guests seemed to be over 50, so I’d say Slavey Hotel suits families and older couples better than younger travelers looking for a lively, youthful atmosphere. It was my second trip to Bulgaria, and we picked Slavey Hotel 4* in Golden Sands because of its positive Google Maps reviews. It lived up to its four-star rating and made for an enjoyable stay. I’d recommend it for a relaxing break.

The bar closed at 11, and just before my turn the staff switched off the lights and told me it was shut, even though I’d watched them serve several guests ahead of me. We arrived by shuttle at 10:30, dropped our bags in the room, then went down for a drink. If they’d given everyone one drink, we could all have been served before closing. I complained at reception. The receptionist offered to bring me a drink, but the bartender refused her too, as if he thought he was in charge. My husband and I had to go out instead. On the way out, another bartender was sprawled across the stairs smoking after his shift. It felt more like a Soviet gulag than a resort, and nothing about the service seemed four-star. I’ve had better service at three-star resorts and budget hotels. I regret staying here. Do yourself a favor and avoid it. Just terrible.

We spent a week here. Food and drinks had a huge range to choose from, and the rooms and pools were clean. The indoor heated pool was an extra bonus. There were activities like dancing, darts, morning gymnastics, and water gymnastics. Natalia from the animation team was lovely and amazing with us. We’ll miss her.

The rooms were fine, but the basic TVs were a letdown. They weren’t smart TVs and only had a mix of Bulgarian and Romanian channels, so I couldn’t really watch anything. Quite a few staff members also didn’t understand English, so it helped to keep things simple and direct. I once asked for a glass of Coke at the bar and the server didn’t understand until I said “cola.” You’re on an all-inclusive plan, with no option to choose something else. Meals are served at sensible times and there’s plenty of time to eat: breakfast 7:30-10, lunch 12:30-14:30, and dinner 18:30-21. The buffet changes a lot from day to day and has a good amount of variety. Drinks with meals include beer, red, white, and rosé wine, plus the usual children’s options: water, orange, grapefruit, pineapple and apple juice, Coke, Sprite, Fanta, and Schweppes. The sodas looked heavily watered down as they were poured, and the alcohol wasn’t very high quality. Coffee and tea are available too. The bar runs from 7 to 23. Cocktails can be good, but it depends on who’s serving. I ordered the same thing twice and one was excellent, the other tasted awful. The sodas are poor, so I’d skip cocktails that use them, especially since there’s a decent choice of alcohol. The snack bar is open 10 to 17 for something light between meals, plus beer or wine. Its ice cream buffet is extraordinary. The desserts with the main meals, though, were awful, so the snack bar is a better bet. There are two outdoor pools, one for adults at 1.6 m and a shallow kids’ pool, plus a 1.2 m indoor pool. They’re open 7 to 18. The beach is fairly close, and reception can give you a special bracelet with a chip to open the shortcut gate. The gate is closed from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m., so the bracelet won’t open it then. I paid 600 euros for six nights for two adults in the pre-season, about 100 euros a night, after booking a few months ahead. That seemed good value for that time of year. We had a good stay, not the best, but good.
