We were so uncomfortable in our room at Complex Ekaterina that we ended up sleeping in the car. It wasn’t clean, and there were earwigs and centipedes inside. When we called reception for help, nobody answered the first two times. Someone finally picked up, but after I asked whether they spoke English, they hung up straight away. The next morning, the receptionist simply printed the bill and said goodbye without mentioning what had happened. The cleanliness and service fell far short of what we expected. I wouldn’t recommend staying here.

There are bungalows, cabins, and rooms at reasonable hotel prices, and I found the staff welcoming. The hotel and bar sit beside the river Tundzha (see picture), with a rough berth for small boats. I did find the peacocks wandering up to my table at random a bit disconcerting!

The rooms were pretty ordinary, with two beds and five TV channels, though we weren’t there to watch TV :))) The hall is large enough for 300 people, and it was a little warm but okay. There was a show program, and the kitchen was fine.
