Caribbean Chillout

We felt watched and uncomfortable during our stay, and eventually moved to another hotel. At the end, we returned around 9am on checkout day to check the room and give back the key. Marloes appeared as I tried the door, shouted at me as though I were trespassing, and said the room had already been cleaned so I couldn’t go in. I handed her the key and walked toward the car, but she followed, yelling that we had taken the key and disappeared and that it was rude. She went to the driver’s side and shouted at my boyfriend about what an awful person I was. I jogged back to the car asking why she was following me. It was a nightmare. We’d reserved a king size bed, but it was two single beds on a king size frame. That surprised us, though at first we were happy enough. We had the whole place to ourselves, and Marloes seemed nice. The next morning, I went for a walk and came back an hour later. She stopped me by the pool to say she’d gone inside and turned off the air conditioner because I hadn’t. I’d seen our car outside and didn’t know my boyfriend had also gone out, probably for coffee. I apologized and said we’d turn it off, but she kept insisting it had to be off even if we were gone for a minute. I didn’t know what else to say, so I repeated that I would and walked away. A night or two later, the power went out while I was brushing my teeth. Marloes knocked, and after I ignored the first two knocks, she kept going until I answered. She said she hadn’t turned off the power. I was stunned that she’d come to tell me that at night, when I could have been asleep. I later learned power cuts do happen in Bonaire. I’d noticed nearby houses still had power and asked whether they had generators. She freaked out, pointing toward the airport. I just wanted to end the conversation, so I said I didn’t think she’d understood me, said goodnight, and went back inside. About 30 minutes later, there was frantic, nonstop knocking and she called my name. I was scared and didn’t answer. With the power out, she couldn’t see me. The following morning she knocked again, not gently, and said housekeeping was coming in an hour. When I said we didn’t need it, she told me that wasn’t up to me. We felt so uncomfortable that we checked into another hotel and packed in a hurry. The place we moved to was called Docks, and it was amazing: the same price for more space and privacy, a more relaxed feel, a nicer bed and pillows, a queen bed without a split between the singles, nice views, free parking, and no A/C police.
