The rooms are new and the one we stayed in was in good condition, but the stay at Joana Palace Hotel over Carnival week had quite a few problems. They put us in a room for four that clearly only fit three, and one of the four beds was broken. The bathroom was tiny, with the door almost touching the toilet. The shower was uncomfortable because there wasn't enough room in the stall, and the bathroom door was coming loose, so water got all over the place. The air conditioner cooled reasonably well, but it was so loud it sounded like a plane about to take off. The reception and elevator areas also seemed a little neglected and could have been cleaner. The restaurant menu barely changed from one day to the next. Fruit at breakfast seemed poorly cared for, with mosquitoes and flies landing on it. Some waiters took our plates before we'd finished eating, which was very uncomfortable. For what we paid, we expected better service and facilities. Several parts of the experience fell short.

The bathroom drain kept pushing water back up, leaving a bad smell. In the room, the sheets were torn, the curtains looked dirty and as if they hadn't been washed in a long time, and the air conditioner didn't work. When we asked someone to check it, they kept putting us off and nothing was fixed. The walls were marked up and unpainted, and the general lack of maintenance and cleaning was obvious. I wouldn't recommend this hotel. The visible kitchen looked dirty too. The pots were dented and burnt, and at meal times there sometimes weren't enough plates and cutlery, so we had to wait. When they arrived, they were wet. The food wasn't good and seemed thrown together carelessly. At Sunday lunch, meat was left on a table without proper care, with flies around and dirty tables. The waiters wore dirty uniforms and were rude, taking plates before guests had finished. The water bottles we asked for were dirty and warm, and the soft drinks were warm too. There was a lot of dirt throughout the hotel, and reception looked like it hadn't been cleaned in ages.
