We had a lovely stay at MD Luar da Montanha and came away with some great memories. Our hosts welcomed us warmly and took care with all the details. The accommodation was cozy, clean, and well looked after, and the setting is beautiful and peaceful, surrounded by nature. A good choice if you’re looking for comfort, quiet, and nature. We’ll definitely come back.

I love this place and have stayed at the inn three times. It’s been three years, though, and the issues I’ve noticed haven’t changed. I hope they improve because I really enjoy bringing my family here. On our last stay, we accidentally flooded the room with the bathtub. There was no squeegee in our chalet, so I messaged the person responsible for reception and got no reply. There were no staff around, and I could only clean up because another guest lent us a squeegee. I also had to ask the staff to clean the chalet during our three-night stay. It would help if someone asked guests whether they wanted cleaning service. The WhatsApp service is really poor. I asked to book the Tempranilo chalet and waited a day for a reply, even though I wanted to come two days later and it was available on Booking. My boyfriend messaged too, and only got an answer after we were already staying there. The woman who replied said she’d had a personal problem, but there should be someone else available to cover. I have no complaints about the staff themselves, especially Rosa, who are all lovely. They just seem overloaded with too many duties. My main concern is that nobody stays there after 10 p.m. If something happens, there’s no one to turn to, and there’s no phone signal. There’s no nighttime staff member or gatekeeper, so anyone could come in. The Tempranilo chalet has a barbecue and cooktop, but hardly any kitchen equipment. Staff brought a few things when I asked, but there still weren’t basics like a knife or spoon, or even a wine glass. I think they need someone dedicated to reception, available from the first WhatsApp or phone contact through welcoming guests on arrival and helping them during their stay. That would also take pressure off the other staff. The dirt road was no negative for me since they warn guests about it. I love staying here with my family, but after three years with no changes, I wanted to share this. I hope they address these things and make a good place even better.

The chalets are comfortable, and the staff handling the services are attentive and polite. It’s a particularly beautiful, welcoming place, perfect for relaxing, taking in the scenery, and enjoying nature. The unpaved road to the inn is long and could be improved. I also wish the chalet faucets had hot water, not just the showers.

The views are beautiful and the Merlot chalet has a lot of charm, but we had such a bad stay that we left two of our four booked nights early. The inn refunded only one night under its cancellation policy and wouldn’t recognize that we were leaving because of the poor service. They were cold and matter-of-fact when we contacted them on WhatsApp to cancel. We were trying to reach them from 11:40 a.m., but the chalet internet wasn’t working during a power cut, the second outage in two days. Check-out was at noon, and they refused to refund the other night because it was already 12:30. They said they’d lose money on that night, but we were the ones who lost out. We planned a trip to relax and ended up with a horrible experience, no one to help us, and no way to recover the cost of that night. We were really upset, especially by how they handled our decision to leave. There were leaks under both the bathroom and kitchen sinks. We reported them as soon as we arrived, but nobody came to look. The electric cooktop was old, and the kitchen had almost no cooking utensils: no pans, knives, spatulas, strainer, or wine glass. After I asked, they brought an old pan with a warped bottom that wouldn’t heat properly. I had to ask again before they brought a usable one. The bathroom light was burned out, and the hair dryer was very weak. We brought our little dog, but the chalet balcony had no protection at all. They say they’re pet friendly, yet a dog could fall straight from the balcony toward a waterfall from a dangerous height. At breakfast, the pet-friendly area was uncovered while it was raining. First we were told to eat in our room, then sent to a table in a room at the back, away from the other guests. The next day we sat on the deck in the sun, but there was no umbrella or shade. The bread and scrambled eggs were cold, and the cakes and sweet rolls looked as if they’d been in the fridge for days. We even saw another couple touch the chafing dish and realize it was cold. The dirt road to the inn was terrible, and after the rain we were stranded there, more than an hour from Monte verde. We were told to be careful on the waterfall trail because there are a lot of snakes, so of course we didn’t go. The inn’s pizza arrived pale and cold. There were no umbrellas or loungers by the pool, and in the heat we had to get chairs from reception. We asked for a beer and were told they didn’t have any. When we left, I was trying to cook and the power went out. We couldn’t find anyone at reception. A housekeeper said the person who handled that was away and we’d have to wait. The fridge had also shut off, so after all the other problems, we decided to leave right away. I’d read lots of good reviews, and maybe we were just very unlucky with everything that went wrong. Still, the service was well below expectations and badly lacking. I don’t recommend the inn, and we won’t return. Given what happened, I believe they should have refunded both remaining nights.

A perfect place to relax and clear your head, with a wonderful team. The few food options, and the limited wine selection, are the only things that could be better. What they do offer is perfect, though.
