Hotel do Forte

The staff are pleasant, and breakfast is divine. The hotel is clean and comfortable, with the fortress and everything else you might need within walking distance. Probably the best place to stay in the city, and highly recommended.

The room would have earned five stars from me if it had a safe for valuables. I had no problems during my stay, though, and would happily return. Hotel Do Forte has comfortable furnishings, helpful service, and a great location. There are plenty of seats at the rooftop bar, a restaurant with lots of choices, live entertainment at the street-level entrance, an illuminated do not disturb indicator, and an outdoor workout area with a good range of equipment.

There’s a restaurant by the lobby that’s not bad, and the hotel is probably quite nice for the area. The room was hot when I arrived because the air conditioner wasn’t running, and it took a few hours after I turned it on to cool things down. You only get one bottle of water, and there isn’t much else in the room. There isn’t really a gym, but there are gyms nearby and a great view for running around the fort.

The location is good, the staff are friendly, and there are some amenities, but I ran into little issues because I don’t speak Portuguese. I was surprised nobody on staff seemed to speak or understand English, Spanish, or French. Management might consider training employees in some basic foreign-language phrases. Small things also kept it from feeling like a four-star hotel: the first room still had the previous guest’s soap in the shower, the sheets were thin and looked worn, and the shower tiles were very slippery. Water pressure seemed to depend on when you showered. Breakfast was decent, with a few choices, but quite simple. For what I paid, I’d choose a larger AirB&B next time I’m in Macapà. The hotel itself is okay.
