Hotel Fagundes Varela

Loved it!

The place was quiet, and the reception and kitchen staff were attentive. We had a four-bed room. Two beds were fine, but one had a very old, soft mattress. The sheets were clean but looked worn from age, and the towels were stained. The room floor was broken in places, the walls were dirty and had a hole, and the curtains were dusty. The air conditioner worked but didn't cool the whole room. The fan was very noisy, with its wire showing. Breakfast was basic but tasty. The cleaning could be better.

The staff were attentive, and the room was a decent size with a hot electric shower. Breakfast was simple but very tasty, and the common area was clean. The room could use a bit more cleaning: there was dirt under the bed and leftover food from the previous guest in the minibar. The value for money is very good. Getting there on foot is difficult, and there's no nearby shopping, but buses stop right outside and go to some neighborhoods.

The only good thing for me was the location. The place is cramped and hygiene was poor: I had to move the bed I was sleeping in and found a whisky bottle and a sock underneath, who knows how long they'd been there. The toilet clogged on the first day. Breakfast is the same every day, and if five people come in at once, there's hardly room to get food and sit down. For water, you either buy a small bottle for 4 reais or ask reception to unlock the kitchen, since the water dispenser is kept locked. I wouldn't recommend the hotel.
