Pousada Serra Da Bocaina Paraty

I’d read so many positive reviews that we booked Pousada Serra de Bocaina, and I wish I’d seen a more honest account first. It’s not necessarily a terrible place, and there’s room for different tastes, but these issues would have stopped me from staying. The room smelled strongly of cleaning products the whole time. A less scented, more natural cleaner would be better for people sensitive to strong fragrances. The Wi-Fi was weak, the worst we had in Brazil. Although there are lots of windows, the rooms didn’t feel private, and the windows seemed unsafe to open and close. The hot water was touchy, going cold and then hot and cold again twice during my shower. There’s only one hair dryer for all the guests. The man at reception even knocked on our door around 8 p.m. to ask for it back, which shocked me. There’s nowhere to make coffee or get it before 8 a.m.; we had to walk along a long, freeway-like road to find a place selling small coffees in tiny styrofoam cups. There’s no soundproofing, so expect occasional waves of partygoers, loud music, and cars. Even the electricity seemed poor: using the borrowed hair dryer made our room lights flicker. Breakfast was a letdown after all the good things I’d read. It only confirmed my impression that the place felt cheap. We’re now staying nearby somewhere amazing with more amenities for not much more money. The rooms were old but clean and OK, and the property is pretty, with lots of plants and a small pool. I still wouldn’t stay here again.
