The setting is a long way from town, so getting to Paraty takes a long bus ride. If being near the city center matters to you, this probably isn’t the place. There are lovely beaches and hikes nearby, though, and I’d recommend it if you’re after a nature focused stay. When I visited in Jan 2025, the atmosphere was relaxed and social, with laid back guests and no partying. The power kept cutting in and out, which meant people actually spent time talking. We joined a tour arranged by the hostel to see the illuminescent plankton and make a fire on the beach. It was great. The host made delicious breakfasts with a good variety and options for dietary restrictions. One thing I found concerning was the dog. It was blind and deaf, seemed constantly on edge, and acted aggressively. I think it should be removed from the property, as it doesn’t fit the tranquil setting. Things may have changed in the past 12 months.

It feels like living on a boat that’s stranded in the forest. The building was made by boat builders, and that really comes through. You’re surrounded by woodland and can hear animals throughout the day. There are lots of different areas, so it’s easy to have some privacy and find a quiet spot without feeling crowded. The staff are warm and professional, the place is always spotless, and they have great suggestions for exploring nearby. I also met so many lovely people who shared a love of nature. Simply the best hostel in Brazil.

I volunteered here for a week and found the place filthy, with bad beds and no fan or anything to make the nights less hot. It smells awful, and there’s nothing to do nearby. The hostel is also a long way from Paraty center, and the instructions were very unclear. They were nice to my face, but would gossip about me in Portuguese when I wasn’t around. I guess they treated paying guests better than volunteers. I really wouldn’t recommend it.

The building was so dark that it was hard to see, and when our room light broke we had to use head torches. The bathrooms stayed damp, with mud on the floor and hardly any hooks or shelves for your things. Our room had dead flies and debris all over the sheets. The kitchen was dirty too: hundreds of ants on the stove, brown sponges, and no washing-up soap. Breakfast was very limited, without the usual staples, and we found the food weird and unpleasant. The hostel dog barked aggressively whenever we came and went and often bit guests, but was allowed to roam freely. During our stay, workmen were banging and walking on the very low roof above us from 8am for most of the day. I like camping and being outdoors, but this was shocking. I can’t understand how the hostel has a decent overall review. Worst hostel I’ve stayed in.

Being right in the forest was lovely. There are plenty of shared spaces, with hammocks, yoga mats, chess, other games, and a small billiard table. Breakfast was really tasty, with vegan options, and cost 30 Real. There’s a little shop five minutes away on foot with a small range of fresh vegetables and other food, so you can cook your own meals at the hostel too.
