Suites 91

The staff were wonderful, attentive, and always willing to help. The suites are close enough to walk to the park or São Miguel beach, about 25 minutes either way. Breakfast had the essentials, and they changed the towels every day. I stayed six days and the bed was changed once, which seemed fine, but there was no room cleaning. There's a shared sink and mini fridge in the corridor. The rooms are very close together, too. A family with a child arrived in the middle of the night and woke the whole guesthouse. It felt a lot like a hostel, just with a private room. I really missed having a clothesline. It rains so much in Penha, and rides at the park get you wet, plus there's a beach nearby, so somewhere to dry clothes would be essential, even if it were in a separate area. I went home with a pile of wet clothes. Hanging them in the shower stall and by the window didn't help, and there wasn't a way to dry bath towels either. There were no trash bins in the room or in the shared area, so after eating snacks we had to put the wrappers in a bag and take them out to the street for collection.

The location is very convenient for the park, and the price is low compared with other hotels and places to stay. Suítes 91 is an adapted house separate from Hotel Conchas, about 30 meters away, where reception and breakfast are provided. The breakfast tasted good, though the selection was limited and the serving area was very cramped. The attendants and housekeepers were attentive. On arrival, D.Nair was especially kind and cleaned the room thoroughly, which eased the strong mildew smell quite a bit. That smell was the main problem. Room 8 smelled strongly of mold, and the other room we tried also had a strong odor. On the following days, we left the bedroom and bathroom windows open whenever we went out to help air it out. Towels were replaced daily, but the bed linens weren't, and room cleaning was very superficial.

The location near Beto Carrero made getting to the park easy, and the price was good for what you get. The rooms have air conditioning, which I really needed during the hot, muggy summer. They're small, with just a bed and bathroom, but worked well for sleeping. Everything was clean, though the first room I was assigned smelled moldy. I asked to move and they promptly gave me another room without that smell. The staff were always helpful when I needed anything. Breakfast was served at the hotel next door and was very good, with plenty of food, fruit, coffee, and juice. Parking is on the street in front of the house, or you can pay an extra daily fee for a locked lot. I wished there were more hooks for clothes and belongings in the room, and an outdoor clothesline for wet beach things.

The staff are so friendly and attentive, and there was also the sweetest resident dog, “Urso,” who looked after us and greeted us wagging his tail! It's close enough to walk to the park. Breakfast is nicely stocked, the air conditioning works, and the shower gets hot. There's a little kitchenette where you can heat food, with plates and cutlery, as well as a mini fridge for everyone to share. Hope I can come back!
