Américas Granada Hotel

The staff were friendly and spoke English, but the stay had a lot of problems. The location wasn't great: you can't really walk anywhere, and it didn't feel very safe, especially for tourists. The online photos were misleading. The rooms were disgusting, and the bathroom was so old, with mold all over the shower. It looked like a prison cell. The sheets and towels were the thinnest and cheapest quality I've ever had. The comforter looked beat up and used, and definitely didn't seem to get washed. Before we'd even gotten into bed, there was a red stain on our sheet that looked like blood.

My husband and I stayed here before our cruise and would gladly come back. It's very centrally located, close to everything, and we found a great restaurant just down the road. Andre Luis at the front desk was terrific, helpful, and full of local information.

The WiFi was so bad that I had to move to a hotel across the way. I need it for work, and the staff blamed the weather. WiFi in RIO may not be the best generally, but this was especially poor. That's the main problem, because otherwise I thought the hotel was amazing and wanted to extend my stay. The room was clean, breakfast was wonderful, and the host was great. The gym is really nice, though some machines need repair. There was also a pool and a lovely upstairs patio to hang out on. It seems like a great hotel for families. The area gets busy at night since it's a party area.

We felt cheated and unsafe. We booked two rooms for €2,100 expecting the advertised 4-star experience on Booking.com, but this was a run-down 1 to 2-star hostel at best. There's more to the story, and the hotel still isn't helping us. The most alarming issue was the air conditioner leaking onto the desk beside damaged power outlets, which seemed like a serious shock hazard. A fire alarm was also coming loose from the ceiling. Hygiene was awful: stained, torn sheets with cigarette burns, spit on the mirror from previous guests, and a sauna with a decomposition smell, like something had died in it. At breakfast, the dishes had old food residue on them. The milk was spoiled and curdled, with solid chunks, which seemed like a real food poisoning risk. The hotel was listed as 4 stars on Booking and only 3 stars on Google. The gym had been closed since our arrival on Feb 14th, with no notice beforehand. Service was nonexistent. Staff seemed indifferent, and our repeated complaints got no results. They said the supervisor was 'unavailable' until Monday evening. There were no extra keycards or pool towels, and the WiFi didn't work, so working was impossible. This place needs an urgent inspection by the health department (Vigilância Sanitária). Save your money and health, and stay somewhere else.
