I've worked here and spent 40 years of my life in this area, which has strong historical ties to political and social movements. There's a lot to see, and it's well policed. Within a few minutes' walk are Câmara Municipal RJ, Theatro Municipal, Museu Nacional de Belas Artes, Teatro Rival, Biblioteca Nacional, Caixa Cultural do RJ, Real Gabinete Português, Escadaria Celeron, Catedral Metropolitana de São Sebastião RJ, Centro Cultural da Justiça Federal, Sala Cecília Meireles, Cine Odeon, Arcos da Lapa, and restaurants including Amarelinho and some smaller ones. There are plenty of ways to get around, with the Metro, VLT and buses. A little farther away are Museu do Amanhã, Roda Gigante and AquaRio, and don't forget the traditional Confeitaria Colombo. You can reach all of these in just a few minutes on foot if you want. If you come by car, there's rotating underground parking. Plenty of good reasons to stop by.

Take the Metro to Cinelândia station and spend the day exploring this cluster of historic, architectural, cultural and food attractions in central Rio. The standout spots are Amarelinho, Theatro Municipal, cinema Odeon, Biblioteca Nacional and Centro Cultural Justiça Federal. There are lots of free activities or options at very fair prices.

So much culture and history in this iconic spot in RJ. Street cinemas, theaters and bars in old buildings all tell a bit of the story.

Cinelândia is a good place to visit without spending anything. Around it are Câmara Municipal de Vereadores do Município do Rio de Janeiro, Teatro Municipal, Biblioteca Nacional, Justiça Federal and other historic buildings, plus the Cinelândia metro station. There's plenty of security from both the Military Police and the Civil Guard, though it's still wise to be careful, as there are quite a few homeless people.

The area around Praça Floriano/Cinelândia has several Rio icons, including Theatro Municipal, Biblioteca Nacional and the Câmara de Vereadores. It's a historic place, with classical buildings and a mix of cultural activities. These days many homeless people occupy the public spaces, which gives the area an unsafe feel.
