The hotel is pretty basic, with no common area, and although there’s a breakfast space, they don’t seem to use it during the day. Its location between Ipanema and Copacabana beaches is great, and the cleaning staff were excellent, quick, and did a fantastic job. They often had the room ready while we were at breakfast. We booked a double room but arrived to find two singles. There wasn’t much effort to fix it right away, and we only learned how to get it changed on the second day. It wasn’t properly set up as a double until day three. We were only there five days, so that was a shame. The room felt much more comfortable once it had a double bed and proper bedding. We’d also paid 200 real for early check-in, so we expected it to be arranged as booked from the start. The towels need replacing too.

Breakfast was decent, but the tables were dirty even when they’d been wiped, and my cappuccino tasted like dirty water. The location is excellent, right in Ipanema and convenient for the beach, restaurants, and exploring. That seems to be what drives the price. For our first-floor room at the back, room 113, we paid about $150 a night, which felt completely unreasonable. At around $60–$70 I might have accepted it, but at that rate the quality didn’t come close. The window faced another building about 5 feet away, making the room feel very closed in. It smelled strongly of humidity and something slightly rancid when we walked in. Corridor light leaked in around the side and bottom of the door at night. One shampoo bottle had its cap half open, and the other was half full. The lighting was harsh, bright white, and almost neon, so the room felt sterile instead of cozy. The beds and pillows seemed more like hostel quality, and the towels were old and so thin they were almost see-through. Service didn’t improve things. I mentioned it was my birthday on the check-in form, but the receptionist basically smirked and didn’t acknowledge it. I asked if we could get a higher floor because I don’t like ground-floor rooms, and the receptionist laughed, said there was no chance for what we paid, and sent us to the back of the building. The corridors also looked like a sci-fi movie set, with sterile white walls where people might walk around in straitjackets. The neighboring residential buildings had bars on their windows, while our room didn’t, which made me feel even less safe. If tourists keep paying these prices, hotels can keep charging them even when the amenities and quality don’t justify the cost. The location alone seems to set the price here. If you book, I’d strongly recommend asking for a higher-floor room or checking the view beforehand. At half the price, I’d have seen the stay differently.

The staff were nice and breakfast was good, but the poor hygiene and maintenance made this especially disappointing for an executive single room at this price. The toilet wouldn’t flush properly, so I had to take off the tank lid and activate it by hand every time. Internet was very slow and kept disconnecting, making it nearly impossible to upload photos. I’ve traveled a lot, and this is the first hotel where basic items like shampoo and body wash weren’t available. Staff said their supplier hadn’t delivered for two days and they didn’t know when that would be resolved. Guests are effectively left to buy toiletries themselves, though no one says that outright. The tiny containers in the room were impractical, several were needed for a proper shower. Towels were extremely old and worn, more like rags than towels. This doesn’t meet even basic hotel standards. If you don’t care about hygiene, it might suit you. I attached some photos of the towels.

The cleanliness was seriously concerning: there was visible mold in the room, and the sheets were dirty. A housekeeping employee acknowledged that, took photos, and confirmed it. We raised these problems several times, but front desk staff, specifically Claudette and Thays, repeatedly refused to help, escalate things, or find a resolution. A portable charger also went missing from our room. Only hotel employees, including housekeeping and minibar service, had access. The day it disappeared, we found a photo of our room left on the nightstand by someone who had entered. We reported it immediately to the front desk and showed them the photo, but got no meaningful response or follow-up. We had to buy another charger while in Rio. The original was black and the replacement was white. At one point, it seemed staff were trying to document the replacement rather than address what happened to the original. At checkout we tried one last time to sort it out. Staff told us there was still no resolution, update, or action. Even so, we were charged for minibar items, including a drink and chocolate, while the bigger problems were left entirely unresolved. We were disappointed by the lack of accountability, follow-up, and basic care throughout the stay. Even after escalation, no meaningful effort was made on site. I rarely review places, but I think other travelers should know. I hope management takes this seriously and improves cleanliness and guest support.

The location was great, and the rooms were good for the price. Breakfast was good, though not great. There’s no pool or beach view, but when I’m traveling, I mainly need a clean place to sleep and be rested for the next day. I compared Bossa Nova with a Copacabana beach hotel that cost twice as much, and I was pleased with the value. I’d recommend it to travelers who won’t spend much time at the hotel. Rio’s main tourist areas aren’t cheap, and I spent a while weighing the more economical Bossa Nova against a pricier hotel. The value won out. I wanted to leave this review after reading recent comments about noise and room cleanliness. One last thing: my flight left at 9 PM, which makes checkout awkward. Bossa Nova offered a half-day rate to check out at 6 PM, so I could enjoy another day in the city, then shower and get ready before my flight. That was really helpful.
