The staff and owners get the one star from me because they always tried to help with everything. But this felt like a family home with some beds put in and called a hostel, and it was a long way from a real hostel atmosphere. Around eight family members live there, and there were kids crying and lying on the sofa all the time. The place was dirty, with old beds, dirty rooms and toilets, and a poor kitchen. The location felt bad, in the center but in the middle of nowhere, and dangerous at night. It also didn't look like the Booking pictures. I'd rather pay a little more and stay in a proper hostel.

We planned to stay one night at Central Hostel in Rio, but ended up extending for a week. The price was reasonable, and we liked both the place and the people. We finally had to leave when our time in Rio ran out so we could return the car to Sao Paulo and catch our flight. Gabby and the two boys from Argentina working there while I was staying were awesome. They gave us lots of useful advice about what to see in the city with the time we had. I'd recommend it, especially if you're traveling on a budget. Maybe the Argentinians will let you try Mate and make some caprihinas for you too! :)

The staff really make the place. They were wonderful and super helpful. Our dorm had more beds than we'd been told, and the location isn't great, but they're doing a good job with what they've got. It wasn't amazing, but it wasn't awful either.

The hostel was new in May 2017, so there were a few small things still to sort out. Once everything was working properly, I thought it would be great. It's convenient for the metro, buses, and central bus station, with a five-minute walk to the metro and a 30-minute metro ride to copacabana. The staff were great, the lounge and dorm rooms were spacious, and it was clean throughout. The beds were good, the rooms had Air con, WiFi worked well, and breakfast included fruit.

As a solo traveler, it's easy to meet people here. The hosts, Walter, Lucas and Margo, are amazing, always smiling and ready to help.
