Copa Roots Hostel

The rooms are good, the staff are friendly, and the shared room and balcony on the top floor are great. Hygiene is clearly worse than at other hostels in the area, though, and the walk up to the hostel is quite steep. In my view, there are better options nearby. If they improve cleanliness, it would be good value for money.

A great location, about 10 minutes from the beach, and the hostel and surrounding area both felt pretty safe. The staff, both Brazilian and international, were very friendly and helpful, from when I arrived until I left. The other guests were all OK too. Great hostel.

The communal area was good for meeting people, and it's only a short walk to Copacabana beach. The room, though, was horrible and the bed needs replacing. The room and bathroom walls were dirty and leaked when it rained. Rain was also coming through the plug socket, so the air conditioning didn't work. The unit was mounted outside the door, right where you'd hit your head when coming out. Expensive and gross.

The hostel felt overcrowded and disorganized. My room had 8 people but not enough space for everyone, though the other rooms looked bigger and more comfortable for eight or nine. The bathrooms needed more frequent cleaning, and they could use the common areas better. Guests weren't allowed to drink anything bought outside or even leave it in the fridge, which was odd. The wifi also didn't work properly.
