You get what you pay for. The front desk staff speak only Portuguese, aren't very helpful when explaining things, and visibly get frustrated if your Portuguese isn't great. There is no room service unless you ask for it specifically and leave your key with them. The location has good and bad sides: the area is run down with a lot of homeless people, and during Carnaval the road closures affect the street the hotel is on. Still, it's not a bad walk back from Sambadrome at 5am. The rooms are about the size of extremely small hotels in Japan. The blanket is a thin veil, the mattress looks disgusting, and the faucet in the room has to be pressed every 2 seconds to keep water flowing. It's as basic as it gets.

The breakfast was super good, the security at the hotel is taken seriously, and the staff are attentive and approachable whenever you interact with them, even though they don't speak English or Spanish. The rooms are tiny but well equipped. The neighborhood can feel scary at first, but you get used to it and realize you're next to Santa Teresa, reached by taking stairs from the opposite street. For a $30 room, I wasn't expecting much, but it exceeded my expectations. I definitely recommend this hotel.

It's an old, simple hotel, but it's been maintained well and the breakfast is great. Very cheap for the quality you get.
